Edwards, Mr. <br />Vandever. Absent: Ms. Slaughter and Mr. Toscano. <br /> <br /> Mr. William Rawn, an architect employed by the <br />University of Virginia to conduct a study of design <br />possibilities along the West Main Street corridor, met with <br />Council to discuss issues concerned with the potential <br />development of West Main Street as well as possible uses, <br />including the following: importance of conserving the <br />qualities of the adjacent neighborhoods and prevent <br />gentrification; encourage community owned businesses along <br />the corridor; develop list of programmatic possibilities with <br />economic realities (residential colleges; housing generally <br />(related to health science personnel and affordable housing); <br />weak market for retail; outreach centers from the hospital; <br />hospital hotel; recreational facilities (perhaps jointly or <br />privately owned); traffic concerns; parking; other public <br />sector functions along corridor; potential for light <br />manufacturing. <br /> <br /> Mr. Rawn stated that recommendations are due to be made <br />by the end of November, with potential sites identified for a <br />residential college, housing, open spaces, and recreational <br />facilities. <br /> <br />President C~g~k <br /> <br /> <br />
