272 <br /> <br />Ms. Kosiewicz added that parents must give permission for their child to be served by special <br />education. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ron Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent of Charlottesville Schools, described <br />school enrollment projections, and said that these projections have been modified to deal with <br />changing enrollments are elementary schools. <br /> <br /> Dr. William Symons, Superintendent of Schools, explained that $190,000 can be saved <br />by not filling five positions throughout the schoOl system, and he believes that a total of <br />$300,000 to $400,000 can be saved. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter asked that a report be provided on what happens to students who leave <br />the school system, and at what grade they leave. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Daugherty about the number of students on the <br />waiting list for pre-school, Ms. Arletta Dimberg, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, said <br />there is not a long waiting list as akernate arrangements are usually found. <br /> <br /> Dr. Symons noted that he is looking at alternatives to extending the school day for pre- <br />school classes. <br /> <br /> The meeting was adjourned. <br />President <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - March 17, 1997 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Mr. <br />Cox, Ms. Daugherty, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano. Absent: Ms. Richards. <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. Brent Nelson, 214 South Street, asked Council for an update on whether the Board <br />of Architectural Review will be changing its meeting time from day to evening hours. Mr. <br />Nelson said he feels that the day meeting time prohibits the public from participating and <br />limits the number of people applying for the BAR. <br /> <br /> Ms. Slaughter said she has conveyed the request to change the meeting time to the <br />BAR, but she will do so again. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ed Strange, a resident of Ivy, referring to options being considered for the future <br />of the Ivy Landfill, said that he favors option 6 without landfilling of construction material. <br />Mr. Strange said that option 7 only favors a small number of trash haulers and he feels it <br />would be better to have a central transfer station. <br /> <br /> Mr. David Booth, a resident of Ivy, presented a comparison of the Ivy Landfill to <br />commercial sites. Mr. Booth said construction debris is unsafe.
