<br />a. APPROPRIATION: $50,910.20- Summer Nutrition Program k~.dr'~ reading)

<br /> WHEREAS, the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established the Summer
<br />Food Service Program to bring about an increased awareness of the critical importance of
<br />proper nutrition for children and a belief that school vacation should not end the availability
<br />of nutritious meals for children; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville shares the same concerns as the USDA; now,
<br />therefore,
<br />
<br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that a
<br />Summer Food Service Program be established as part of the City of Charlottesville's Summer
<br />Recreation Programs and $50,910.20 is hereby appropriated from the unappropriated balance
<br />of the General Fund to account Code 11-042-062028 in the Grants Fund for the purpose of
<br />carrying out this program. Such appropriation shall be conditioned upon the substantial
<br />reimbursement to the General Fund by the USDA.

<br />b. APPROPRIATION: $6,000 - Donation by Estate of Anne Marvin (2nd reading)
<br />
<br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that the
<br />sum of $6,000.00, bequested to the City from the late Anne Edwards Marvin, is hereby
<br />appropriated to the following departments, pursuant to the terms of Mrs. Marvin's will:

<br />d. RESOLUTION: Proclaiming National Public Works Week
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, public works services provided in our community are an integral part of
<br />our citizens everyday lives; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the
<br />efficient operation of public works systems and programs such as water, sewer, gas, streets
<br />and highways, public buildings, solid waste collection, transit, and parks; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the health, safety, and comfort of this community greatly depends on
<br />these facilities and services; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the quality and effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning,
<br />design, and construction, is vitally dependent upon the efforts and skill of public works
<br />officials; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated personnel who staff public
<br />works departments i materially influenced by the people's attitude and understanding of the
<br />importance of the work they perform;
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, I, Katherine E. Slaughter, Mayor of the City of Charlottesville,
<br />on behalf of the City- Council, do hereby proclaim the week of May 18 through 24, 1997 as
<br />NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK in the City of Charlottesville, and call upon all
<br />citizens and civic organizations to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing
<br />our public works and to recognize the contributions which public works officials make every
<br />day to our health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.
