63 <br /> <br />business matters as were identified in the motion convening the executive meeting were <br />heard, discussed or considered by the Council. <br /> <br />The meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Tuesday, September 2, <br />1997 AT 8:00 a.m. IN THE Second Floor Conference Room. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Executive session as provided by Section 2.1-344(A)(1) of the Virginia Code <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (signed) <br /> <br />SECOND FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM - September 2, 1997 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: Mr. <br />Cox, Ms. Daugherty, Ms. RichardS, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Toscano, seconded by Ms. Daugherty, Council voted to meet in <br />executive session for the purpose of appointed members to various City boards or agencies, <br />as authorized by Section 2.1-344(A)(1) of the Virginia Code, with Mr. Cox and Ms. Richards <br />absent for the vote: <br /> <br /> Council reconvened in open session and, on motion by Ms. Daugherty, seconded by <br />Mr. Cox, certified that, to the best of each member's knowledge, (i) only public business <br />matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia law were discussed in <br />the executive meeting to which this certification resolution applies, and (ii) only such public <br />business matters as were identified in the motion convening the executive meeting were <br />heard, discussed or considered by the Council. <br /> <br />The meeting was adjourned. <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - September 2, 1997 <br /> <br /> Council met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Mr. <br />Cox, Ms. Daugherty, Ms. Richards, Ms. Slaughter, Mr. Toscano <br /> <br />PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Mr. Bernhard Leipelt asked that Council respond to President Clinton's appeal for racial <br />hearing by 1) issuing a multi-media invitation to the community to contribute ideas; <br />2) hold a brainstorming feedback session; and 3) appoint a multi-ethnic commission. <br /> <br /> Dr. Henry Silva supported Mr. Leipelt's request, noting that racism still exists in <br />Charlottesville. Dr. Silva asked what the community is doing to help young black children <br />obtain jobs, and suggested renaming a street in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., which he <br />feels would instill pride in the black community. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barry McLane, 3085 Earlysville Road, a founder of"You've Got a Friend" day, <br />invited the Council and public to attend the 4th annual "Yoffve Got a Friend" day on <br />September 20th at Charlottesville High School. <br /> <br /> <br />
