Edwards, Mr. Towe, <br />Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. <br /> <br /> Ms. Judith Mueller, Director of Public Works, stated <br />that information about the Long Street/Free Bridge <br />improvements and its impact upon Burnley-Moran School and <br />parking lot should be available in the near future. Ms. <br />Mueller explained that the City will review and approve the <br />design for the improvements, but noted that bidding for the <br />project will probably not occur for another year. <br /> <br /> Dr. Joseph McGeehan, Superintendent of City Schools, <br />presented the following listing of areas the Schools will <br />focus on or study further in the next year: core academic <br />curriculum; school centered decision making; drop out <br />prevention) professional development academy; foundation <br />established for regional school divisions; alternative <br />education grades 7-12; parent involvement; instructional <br />systems technology; redesign of school organization, <br />curriculum, teaching, and technology; access to <br />post-secondary education; drug education; partnerships for <br />learning; early childhood education; strategic plan; research <br />and evaluation; incentive pay; and student leadership. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stressed the importance of the schools being <br />able to measure their, success in the different areas. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck recommended that the role of team athletics, <br />school spirit, encouraging participation in the artst and <br />vocational education be included among the areas listed by <br />Dr. McGeehan. <br /> <br /> Dr. McGeehan agreed with Mr. Buck's recommendations and <br />noted that the absence of an area on his list did not mean it <br />would not be dealt with, since many on-going priority areas <br />were not included on the list. Dr. McGeehan stated that the <br />Charlottesville-Albemarle Vocational Education Board is <br />studying the issue of vocational education and will be <br />bringing back recommendations to the City and County SchooI <br />Boards. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Vandever, Dr. McGeehan <br />stated that the Schools are beginning to intensely look at <br />minority education in the school system. <br /> <br /> <br />
