243 NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Wednesday, April 11, 1990 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Basement Conference Room. THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: Luncheon meeting with School Board BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR BY Jeanne Cox (signed) BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM - April 11, 1990 Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: Mr. Buck, Rev. Edwards, Mr. Towe, Mr. Vandever. Absent: Ms. Waters. Ms. Chris Thomas, Coordinator of School and Community Relationsl gave an update of the School's strategic planning process. Ms. Thomas stated that a planning team had been formed consisting of community people, parents, teachers, and principals. A second team had been formed consisting of administrators, teachers, and general staff. Surveys conce~i~n~ the schools have been sent out to members of the community at large, students, and the League of Women Voters. Ms. Thomas not~d that a special survey had been developed for use in the public ~housing projects. Ms. Thomas stated that two initial i~su-~s that have been identified are the need to maximize how children are grouped for instruction and the need to help staff deal with the diversity of students in the schools. Mr. Hendrix stated that he felt the survey forms were inadequate in addressing potential weaknesses in the schools. Responding to a question from Mr. Towe, Ms. Linda Seaman, School Board member, stated that the position of principal at CATEC is being advertised. Mr. Lawrence Burruss, School Board member and a member of the CATEC Board, stated that programs at CATEC had to be cut because of the reduction in State funding, and noted that enrollment had been a factor in this funding reduction. Mr. Towe asked what the status was of the alternative education programs and Mr. Pezzoli replied that a report has been commissioned by the Superintendent and will be presented to the School Board at a May study session. Edwards (arrived late), Mr. Towe, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. MINUTES On motion by Mr. Towe, seconded by Mr. Buck, the minutes of the March 28th meeting were approved as presented, with Rev. Edwards absent for the vote. On motion by Mr. Towe, seconded by Mr. Vandever, the minutes of the March 29th meeting were approved as presented, with Rev. Edwards absent for the vote. On motion by Mr. Towe, seconded by Mr. Vandever, the minutes of the April 2nd meeting were approved as presented, with Rev. Edwards absent for the vote.
