157 <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Stern of 1204 Holmes Avenue, stated that he <br />felt JAUNT provided an essential service and expressed hope <br />that the proposed increase could be reduced. Mr. Stern <br />stated that he would prefer to raise the fare rather than <br />cut services. Mr. Stern cautioned Council against assuming <br />that government must get smaller since the budget situation <br />will improve when the recession is over. Mr. Stern <br />recommended that a "rainy day" fund be built up for future <br />times of recession and added that Council may want to <br />consider raising taxes. <br /> <br /> Mr. Gerhard Glomm of 110 Westwood Circle, stated that he <br />would prefer to increase the appropriation to JAUNT rather <br />than fund improvements at the Corner shopping area. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sandy Snyder of St. Clair Avenue, stated that she <br />was willing to pay more in taxes to keep City services. <br /> <br /> As there were no other speakers, the public hearing was <br />closed. <br /> <br />PUBLIC HEARING: PROPOSED ELIMINATION OF BUS ROUTE #8 <br /> <br /> Mr. Lee Scouten of 406 Oak Street, encouraged Council to <br />maintain and expand bus route #8 because it is a route that <br />tourists use. Mr. Scouten recommended investigating the <br />possibility of combining the route with other routes to <br />increase ridership. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jay Levine, Vice President for Health Sciences at <br />the University of Virginia, requested that bus route ~8 be <br />maintained since many patients, including indigent patients, <br />use the bus to travel from the Health Sciences Center to Blue <br />Ridge Hospital. Mr. Levine indicated that the University <br />would be willing to work with the City to find ways to <br />maintain the route. <br /> <br /> Ms. Marlene Stone, Administrator of Blue Ridge Hospital, <br />stated that many patients and employees of the Blue Ridge <br />Hospital depend on bus route ~8 for transportation. <br /> <br /> Ms. Susan Frankl of 630 Park Street, stated that bus <br />route #8 is her only means of transportation to Piedmont <br />Virginia Community College (PVCC) since she does not drive. <br /> <br /> Mr. Wolfe Frankl of Gooseneck Lane, stated that his <br />daughter is handicapped and~moved to an apartment on Park <br />Street specifically because it was on the bus route to PVCC. <br />Mr. Frankt stated that if the bus route was discontinued his <br />daughter would not be able to continue in school. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Santoski of 2421 Sunset Road and representing <br />Workshop V, stated that many Workshop V clients use bus route <br />#8 and noted that many more employers are now willing to.hire <br />handicapped persons, but transportation continues to be a <br />problem. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barry R. Kear of 708-A Levy Avenue, stated that he <br />works at Blue Ridge Hospital and depends upon bus route ~8 to <br />get to work since he does not have a drivers license. <br /> <br /> Ms. Pauline M. Kear of 708-A Levy Avenue, stated that <br />she depends on bus route ~8 to get to work at Blue Ridge <br />Hospital. <br /> <br /> Ms. Shannon R. Jackson, an Albemarle County resident, <br />stated that she depends on bus route ~8 to get to PVCC and <br />work, adding that the money the City would save by <br />eliminating it is not worth eliminating the education of <br />others. <br /> <br /> <br />
