• AN ORDINANCE <br />TO AMEND AND REORDAIN SECTION 31-133 <br />OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, <br />1976, AS AMENDED, AND FURTHER TO AMEND <br />CHAPTER 31 OF SUCH CODE BY ADDING A SECTION <br />NUMBERED 31-170.1, THE AMENDED AND ADDED SECTIONS <br />RELATING TO LIMITATIONS ON THE NUMBER, SIZE AND OTHER <br />CHARACTERISTICS OF SIGNS PERMITTED TO BE ERECTED <br />UNDER THE SIGN CONTROL PROVISIONS OF THE CITY ZONING ORDINANCE. <br />U <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville <br />that §31-183 of the Code of the City of Charlottesville, 1976, as <br />amended, be amended and reordained, and that Chapter 31 of such <br />Code be further amended by adding a section numbered 31-170.1 as <br />follows: <br />Section 31-170.1. Replacement or consolidation <br />of existing signs. <br />When existing signs are replaced or consolidated, the <br />maximum total sign surface area of the replacement or consolidated <br />sign shall be (a) thirty percent less than the total sign surface <br />area of the signs being replaced or consolidated, or (b) the area <br />permitted by §31-170; whichever is greater. <br />Section 31-183. Signs for which permit not required. <br />No permit shall be required for the following signs, if they <br />are installed in compliance with the provisions of this article. <br />Signs approved in accordance with article XIX shall be in com- <br />pliance with the site plan as approved by the planning commission. <br />All of the following signs may be erected in any of the city zoning <br />districts: <br />(g) Temporary directional or informational signs not over six <br />square feet in area, provided the activity which the sign promotes <br />is one permitted under the use regulations applicable to the district <br />where the sign is located. Signs for temporary events, sales or <br />special promotions may be erected not more than one month before the <br />event or activity, and shall be removed within one week of its <br />conclusion. In no case shall any such temporary sign be displayed <br />for a period longer than two months in any calendar year. There <br />shall be no more than two such temporary signs per establishment <br />at any time. <br />
