• AN ORDINANCE <br />CHANGING THE STREET DESCRIPTION OF PEDESTRIAN MALL <br />IN SECTION 16-63.5 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottes- <br />ville, Virginia that Section 16-63.5 of the City Code be amended <br />and reordained as follows: <br />Sec. 16-63.5. Operation generally. <br />(a) Every person riding a bicycle upon a street, roadway or <br />other public vehicular area shall be subject to the provisions of <br />this code and the provisions of chapter 4 of title 46.1 of the <br />Code of Virginia applicable to drivers of motor vehicles, unless <br />the context of any such provision clearly indicates otherwise. <br />(b) Every person operating a bicycle upon a street or <br />highway shall ride as near to the right side thereof as <br />practicable, exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle <br />or one proceeding in the same direction. <br />(c) Persons riding bicycles upon streets or highways shall <br />not ride two or more abreast except on paths or parts of highways <br />• or streets set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. <br />(d) Wherever a useable path for bicycles has been provided <br />adjacent to a roadway, bicycle riders shall use such path and <br />shall not use the roadway. <br />(e) No person operating a bicycle upon a highway or street <br />shall carry any package, bundle or article which prevents the <br />driver from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars. <br />(f) No person riding upon any bicycle shall attach the same <br />or himself to any other vehicle on the roadway. <br />(g) No person riding a bicycle on a street, highway or <br />other public vehicular area shall permit any person to ride on <br />the handlebars. <br />(h) No person shall ride a bicycle on any sidewalk or other <br />area designated exclusively for pedestrian traffic including, <br />without limitation, the pedestrian mall area on Main Street <br />between East Seventh Street and Water Street Sixth Street,- N. -E. - <br />and the intersection of West Mein Street and Preston Avenue. <br />Approved by Council <br />• October 20, 1986 <br />C erk of Council <br />1 86-7-34 <br />
