AN ORDINANCE <br />TO AMEND AND REORDAIN SECTIONS 31-170, 31-174.1, <br />31-179, AND 31-237 OF CHAPTER 31 OF THE CODE <br />OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, 1976, AS AMENDED, <br />RELATING TO SIGNAGE REQUIREMENTS AND <br />PETITIONS FOR VARIANCES. <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, <br />Virginia, that Sections 31-170, 31-174.1, 31-179, and 31-237 of the <br />Code of the City of Charlottesville, 1976, as amended, are hereby <br />amended and reordained, as follows: <br />Sec. 31-170. Maximum Sign Area. <br />(a) The total area of signs allowed for any building shall <br />not exceed one hundred fifty square feet except where district <br />regulations are more restrictive or as provided in section 31-174 <br />of this Code. The area of each sign face shall be included in <br />calculating the total sign area; provided, however, that when any <br />additional establishment is proposed to be located in a building <br />where the existing establishment(s) has a sign or signs already in <br />place, such additional establishment shall be permitted one <br />additional sign area equal to the lesser of: <br />(1) Fifty square feet; or <br />(2) The sign area specified by the applicable <br />. district regulation set forth in division 3 of this <br />article. <br />(b) No single sign face of any freestanding or projecting <br />sign shall have an area greater than thirty square feet except as <br />provided for in Section 31-179(d). <br />(c) No wall sign shall have an area greater than one hundred <br />square feet. <br />(d) No roof sign shall have an area greater than fifty square <br />feet. <br />Section 31-174.1.
