• (i) The location size in diameter at breast height or canopy <br />area and species identification of all trees existing on the site <br />prior to construction with a caliper of eight inches or greater. <br />and the canopy area of croups of trees and individual trees <br />standing alone that will be retained and used to meet tree cover <br />requirements. The site plan shall show wooded areas, which shall <br />be designated by symbols coincident with the areas of trees; and <br />an indication of which trees are to be retained and which have to <br />be removed, along with methods to be used to assure that the trees <br />will be adequately protected during construction. Such methods <br />shall conform to the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control <br />Handbook, and shall be shown on a tree protection plan. <br />Sec. 31-199. Standards for preservation of natural <br />environment and energy conservation. <br />(a) In order to preserve the character and natural <br />environment of the area and to provide visual and noise buffering, <br />the planning commission shall refuse to approve any site plan which <br />proposes unnecessary destruction of trees and other natural <br />features. <br />(b) The planning commission shall require assurances that the <br />developer has made reasonable effort, in light of the proposed <br />• development, to preserve, replenish, protect and utilize: <br />(1) Trees of eight -inch caliper or larger. <br />(2) Ornamental trees of any size. <br />(3) Trees within required setbacks or along boundaries <br />unless necessary to remove for access, grading, tree <br />health, circulation, utilities or drainage. <br />(4) Streams in their natural condition. <br />(5) Ground area from soil erosion and excessive water <br />runoff. <br />(6) Natural features of the site which promote energy <br />conservation. <br />Sec. 31-199.1.
