• RESOLUTION <br />AMENDING THE POLICY OF <br />COUNCIL WITH REGARD TO THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE <br />SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION <br />WHEREAS, this Council has previously adopted a resolution establishing <br />a procedure for the selection of persons to be appointed to the Social <br />Development Commission and has amended that resolution from time to time; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the Council now desires further to amend that policy; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville that the following statement, as amended, is hereby <br />adopted as the policy of the Council with regard to the appointment of <br />members of the Social Development Commission: <br />The Council shall strive to appoint members to the Commission <br />who have a strong interest in and knowledge of social concerns. The <br />members shall be available to attend regular meetings as well as to <br />work on special projects. The Council shall appoint eleven members and <br />strive to balance the Commission in terms of geography, race, income, age <br />and sex. <br />Of the eleven members, four shall be appointed from the following <br />is <br />special categories: <br />(a) One member of the City School Board or person designated <br />by the Board. <br />(b) One member of the University of Virginia faculty or <br />administration. <br />(c) One member of the City Planning Commission. <br />(d) One minority resident of the City. <br />The remaining seven persons appointed to the Commission shall be <br />members of or have interest in one or more of the following groups: <br />(a) Low income residents. <br />(b) City churches. <br />(c) Youth. <br />(d) Persons 60 years of age or older. <br />(e) Voluntary service organizations. <br />(f) Social service agencies. <br />(g) Business or business organizations. <br />(h) Persons experienced in dealing with concerns of health, <br />employment, safety and justice, culture and communications, <br />or handicapped persons. <br />(i) College or university student. <br />It shall be the policy of the Council to permit existing members <br />of the Commission to continue to serve until the end of their terms <br />• and to replace such present members with persons from the foregoing <br />categories as vacancies arise. <br />Approved by Council <br />September 2, 1986 C erk of Council 86-6-47 <br />
