RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS, Charlottesville was known as the wine capital <br />of Virginia in the late 1800's because of the location of the <br />then famous Monticello Winery on Wine Street; and <br />WHEREAS, Charlotteville is now the present center of <br />wine growing in Virginia with ten wineries located in our <br />Monticello viticultural area which is the largest in the <br />State; and <br />WHEREAS, we have the greatest concentration of wine <br />grape vineyards within an hour of Charlottesville; and <br />WHEREAS, Charlottesville is the headquarters of the <br />Jeffersonian Wine Grape Growers Society which is responsible <br />for the Virginia Wine Museum at historic Michie Tavern, the <br />Annual Monticello Wine and Food Festival at the Boar's Head <br />Inn, and the preservation of the Society's records at the <br />University of Virginia's Alderman Library; and <br />WHEREAS, Charlottesville is the location for <br />• the home of Thomas Jefferson and the site of his <br />vineyard and his efforts to produce quality wines <br />Virginia; <br />Monticello, <br />original <br />in <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of <br />Charlotteville, supports the efforts of the Jeffersonian Wine <br />Grape Growers Society to regain Charlotteville's rightful <br />title as the wine capital of Virginia. <br />Approved by Council <br />August 17, 1987 <br />er o Council <br />c <br />
