RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville is a unique place, <br />blessed with natural beauty and a tradition that nourishes <br />life and freedom; and <br />WHEREAS, there exists here a deep and abiding sense of <br />civic pride in, and concern for, the diverse peoples drawn <br />to and living within its boundaries; and <br />WHEREAS, the well being, protection and safety of the <br />community's residents and visitors is a matter of importance <br />and priority; and <br />WHEREAS, the existence of all life is threatened by the <br />manufacture, storage and potential use of nuclear weapons; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the year 1988 is of special significance in <br />that it commemorates the Centennial of the community's <br />incorporation as a city; <br />• NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED that the City of <br />Charlottesville be declared a non-nuclear weapons area; a <br />community where the manufacture and storage of nuclear <br />weapons that can be used to destroy, rather than to nurture, <br />life will not be permitted. <br />IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Charlottesville, <br />by so declaring, strengthens its commitment to be a community <br />that cherishes life. <br />Signed, sealed and declared this 16th day of May, 1988. <br />al <br />erk of Counci <br />76 <br />0 <br />
