EARTH WEEK RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS, the quality of all aspects of life in Central <br />Virginia and around the world depends on a healthy <br />environment; and <br />WHEREAS, the long-term maintenance and restoration of a <br />healthy environment requires the informed participation of <br />every citizen of every age, interest and background; and <br />WHEREAS, informed participation depends on an <br />understanding of environmental issues acquired through <br />environmental education; and <br />WHEREAS, effective environmental education that empowers <br />citizens to act on their knowledge requires the cooperation <br />and talents of government leaders, environmental <br />organizations, businesses, schools, religious institutions <br />and other key players in our community; and <br />WHEREAS, the six jurisdictions that make up the Thomas <br />Jefferson Planning District belong to a Piedmont bioregion <br />comprised of water, air, wildlife, people and other resources <br />• governed by ecological boundaries as well as political <br />boundaries; and <br />WHEREAS, establishing a sustainable planet for our <br />children begins with working together today to sustain the <br />community where we live; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia resolves that Earth Week, comprised <br />of Earth Day celebrated each April 22 along with both <br />weekends surrounding it, be permanently established in our <br />community as a time for cooperative environmental education <br />that provides us each year with the tools necessary to reach <br />our environmental goals. <br />Approved by Council <br />April 5, 1993 <br />rk of City Council <br />0 <br />
