PROCLOMOT/ON <br />• WHEREAS, on Saturday, September v4, i994 at Charlottesville High School, the <br />Charlottesville Police Officer's Association and the Charlottesville Police Deportment will sponsor <br />"You've Got a Friend,,, an event which will enable the police to reach out to the Charlottesville <br />community, specifically targeting children in grades H through 6th , in an interactive environment in <br />order to highligh t who the police are and what they do for the community; and <br />WHCRCHS, thegoals of "You've Gota Friend"areas follows: <br />To bring back the role model image of the police officer, <br />To concentrate on the community's children in grades ff-6th, promoting abetter <br />understanding of why the police are their "friends; " <br />To reach out to the members of the community who do not hove frequentcon fact <br />with the police, but who would support their efforts in the community if they had <br />a betterunderstanding of who they are and what they do; <br />To develop a sense of unity between the I ocal low enforcemen tagencies <br />To present the Charlottesville Police Oepartmentand the Citgmonagement to <br />the community as an organization that is there to serve the community, <br />To reach out to the neighborhoods within the community that may see the police <br />as "outsiders"and to reaffirm the idea that the police are there to serve everyone <br />equally and fairly; and <br />• - To educate the community on how they can work with the police to create asofer <br />environment. <br />WHCRCHS, approximately lso law enforcement representatives, services organization <br />representatives and other volunteers are empected to be present over the duration or thee vent; and <br />WHCRCHS, "You've Got a Friend" will serve as an introduction to the community of a new <br />understanding that will hopefully develop between the community's youth and the police and will be <br />reinforced throughout the year with other events and activities. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, /, David J. Toscano, Mayor of the City of Charlottesville, do hereby <br />proclaim Saturday, Septembers¢, 2994 as "YOU' VC GOTH FR/ENO' OHY, and call upon all citizens <br />to participate in "You've Got a friend" activities and to help the police in their efforts to macre this a <br />betterand soler community in which to live. <br />Signed and sealed this 6th dog of September, -z994. <br />• David J.
