0
I1
WHEREAS, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among American women;
WHEREAS, in 1997 an estimated 4,400 Virginia women will be diagnosed with breast
cancer and 1,110 will die from the disease; and
WHEREAS, early detection could spare as many as one-third of those lives.
Mammography, an "x-ray" of the breast, is the single most effective method of detecting breast
changes that may be cancer, long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt. In conjunction
with monthly breast self-examination and regular clinical breast examination, mammography
can help to discover breast cancer early, when the chances for successful treatment are best.
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the City Council of the City of Charlottesville, do hereby
proclaim October 1997 as BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, and urge all women in
Charlottesville to learn about early detection guidelines and to check with their doctors about
whether to get a mammogram. We urge each and every resident of Charlottesville to encourage
the women they care about to practice breast cancer early detection.
Signed and sealed this 21st day of October, 1997.
Katherine E.
