• RESOLUTION <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville strives to ensure every citizen a full <br />and fair opportunity for the highest quality education possible; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville highly values the University of <br />Virginia as the Commonwealth's capstone institution of higher learning; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville recognizes and lauds the <br />achievements of the University of Virginia in providing national leadership in <br />education, retention, and graduation rates of African-American students; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville supports the principle of committed <br />action to recruit, retain, and enhance opportunities for higher education for all <br />students including African-Americans; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville appreciates the positive benefits of <br />racial diversity; and <br />WHEREAS, the University's current race sensitive admissions process <br />strengthens the City of Charlottesville, and our opportunities for local youth, <br />• recruitment of teachers and city employees, cultural richness and positive <br />national recognition, as well as in our efforts towards better human relations; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville discourages any policy change that <br />will deter or limit the high level of success of diversity efforts by the University of <br />Virginia; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Charlottesville strongly <br />urges the University of Virginia to maintain its admissions policy which includes <br />race as a factor, and which enrolls students who are broadly representative of <br />cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity of our community, state, and nation. <br />Approved by Council <br />October 4, 1999 <br />erk of City Council <br />• <br />
