• A. Students who plan to work in the City Schools or in other public service positions.
B. Students in mentoring programs or similar programs, including Project Discovery, Upward
Bound, Imani, Academic Mentor (Weed and Seed), Charlottesville Redevelopment and
Housing Authority Self -Sufficiency Program. .
C. Degree and nature of financial need.
D. Academic performance and promise; extra curricular activities; community service; and/or
extraordinary personal circumstances.
Examples of types of recipients who could benefit from the program:
An 18 year old senior at CHS living at home with a parent and several siblings. The family
lives at the poverty level, has never sent anyone to college, few have completed high school.
He has a B+ average, has been admitted to a university, and cannot afford to go without
scholarship funds.
• A 25 year old instructional assistant in the City schools. She graduated from CHS 7 years
ago, likes being independent and has a second job which allows her to have her own
apartment. She loves kids and wants to be a teacher in the City. With a college degree she
would qualify as a teacher in the City schools.
• A 22 year old PVCC student. He works part time, fives with his parents, and hopes to
become the fust member of his family to attend college. He had to drop out of PVCC this
• semester and work full time, in order to pay for tuition in the coming semester.
What they all have in common: 1) a college education will greatly enrich their lives and that of
their families, and 2) they live "close to the edge." They can barely afford to make ends meet
each month; one major illness or big car repair or housing problem derails them from their
dream of going to college.
Other Information:
Scholarship grants are renewable for four years, with a possible fifth year in special
circumstances. In order to renew the grant, the student must maintain eligibility levels set by the
Board. Documentation of continued eligibility must be received from the school.
This program may be enlarged to include other school jurisdictions such as Albemarle County. A
scholarship recipient who graduates from college and signs a teaching contract or takes another
public service position within the City will be awarded a $1,000 signing bonus (paid from the
fund's revenues).
The Public Schools Scholarship does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, color, national origin, age or disability.
Board of Directors
• A Board will be established to oversee the program and raise additional revenues. Members of
the Board will be appointed by the following: one by each participating school board, by each
