• A RESOLUTION <br />RENAMING THE DOWNTOWN RECREATION CENTER <br />THE HERMAN KEY RECREATION CENTER <br />WHEREAS, several current and former City Planning Commission <br />members have asked City Council to honor the memory of Herman Key, a former <br />Planning Commissioner and community activist; and, <br />WHEREAS, the Fifeville Neighborhood Association has recommended <br />that the City's Downtown Recreation Center be renamed to observe, honor, and <br />celebrate Herman Key's life and his service to the City of Charlottesville and its <br />citizens; and, <br />WHEREAS, during his tenure on the Charlottesville Planning Commission <br />Herman Key demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the quality <br />of life for all Charlottesville residents; and, <br />WHEREAS, Herman Key was a strong and effective advocate for the <br />rights of persons with disabilities, and should be recognized for his tireless efforts <br />to improve the mobility, safety and access throughout the City for people with <br />• disabilities; and, <br />WHEREAS, the courage and resiliency demonstrated by Herman Key <br />throughout his life serve as an eloquent and inspirational example for us all; and, <br />WHEREAS, Herman Key's dedicated public service and contributions to <br />City government and his love for playing wheelchair basketball, often at the <br />Downtown Recreation Center, make it appropriate to rename the Downtown <br />Recreation Center to honor his life and memory. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the <br />City of Charlottesville that the Downtown Recreation Center is renamed and shall <br />henceforth be known as the Herman Key Recreation Center. <br />Approved by Council <br />November 15, 2004 <br />`� <br />. c <br />C1ofCityCity Coulncil <br />11 <br />
