• A RESOLUTION GRANTING A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS TO THE MELTING POT RESTAURANT FOR A WALL SIGN ON THE PROPERTY LOCATED AT 112 5Tn STREET, S.E. WHEREAS, at the request of the property owner the Board of Architectural Review (`BAR") has approved a comprehensive signage plan for the Holsinger Building located at 112 5Street, S.E.; and, WHEREAS, the approved plan allows three wall signs on the building's Water Street side, each with a maximum size of 25 square feet; one wall sign on 5'h Street, S.E.; three projecting "tenant" signs on Water Street; and two projecting "tenant" signs on 5`h Street; and, WHEREAS, the certificate of appropriateness approved by the BAR for the Melting Pot Restaurant provided that a proposed logo for the business could not be included on the wall sign; and, WHEREAS, the owner's representative has appealed the BAR's decision with respect to The Melting Pot's wall sign to City Council; and, WHEREAS, after due consideration of the views of the BAR, City staff and the • owner's representative as presented at the City Council meeting of June 5, 2006; of the adopted Design Guidelines for new construction in an historic district; and the City's Historic Preservation and Architectural Design Control Overlay District ordinances (City Code sec. 34-271 et seq.), including those governing construction and alterations (City Code sec. 34-276), the City Council does hereby find: 1. The proposed maximum size limitation of 25 square feet for each wall sign, as provided in the comprehensive signage plan, is reasonable and appropriate; harmonious with the character and the approved architectural design of the exterior of the building, and compatible with the Downtown Architectural Design Control District; and, 2. The inclusion of the proposed logo on the wall sign is harmonious with the character and the approved architectural design of the exterior of the building, and compatible with the Downtown Architectural Design Control District; provided that the color of the logo matches the lettering on the wall sign (nugold stainless steel with brushed finish), rather than the proposed red or burgundy logo which is not compatible with and detracts from the overall character of the approved building design. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council for the City of Charlottesville that a certificate of appropriateness is hereby approved for the proposed wall sign at The Melting Pot Restaurant, subject to the following conditions: (1) the wall sign shall be no larger than 25 square feet; and (2) the color of the logo on the wall sign
