RESOLUTION <br />• WHEREAS, the City Council has determined it necessary to rehabilitate the infrastructure of the <br />Downtown Mall, and; <br />WHEREAS, City Council has reviewed the plans prepared by MMM Engineering, and; <br />WHEREAS, City Council has made several key decisions in authorizing this project to move forward, <br />and enthusiastically anticipates the renewed success of the Mall as a great public space and economic <br />engine of the City; <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Charlottesville that the <br />following design decisions are made: <br />• The project scope extends from 6d' Street to Old Preston, the area of the original Halprin project. <br />• Refurbish the existing fountain <br />• Use existing lights — comply with dark skies and use LED lights if determined appropriate. <br />• No permanent ca156 enclosures <br />• Add newspaper box corrals as a bid alternate <br />• No Sister City plaza <br />• No additional public art <br />• Do not alter tree patterns (nothing but two red maples and one stump to be removed) <br />• Yes to WIFI <br />• Yes to use of Granite, but no new banding <br />• Yes, add drinking fountains <br />• • Study for future possibility, a play area for children <br />• Use 4 x 8 sand set bricks in the pedestrian crossings <br />• Work to determine ways to employ the local community in the construction of the project. <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Charlottesville instructs the design <br />team to use 4 x 12 brick pavers that are set in sand. Council has determined that this is the optimum <br />method for brick installation in light of the maintenance plan proposal by City Parks & Recreation and in <br />an effort to honor the Lawrence Halprin design. <br />Approved by Council <br />July 21, 2008 <br />Af City Council <br />• <br />
