26~
Mr. Pezzoli stated that the majority of space
problems have been addressed and the School Board hopes to
add two additional classrooms which were originally not
scheduled to be built until next year.
Mr. Pezzoli stated that the Board has also been
addressing the teacher, curriculum and discipline concerns
raised, but noted that while these concerns have been
seriously addressed by the Board, they appear to be sometimes
more a matter of teacher choice.
It was noted that the remainder of the School Board did
not agree with Mr. Hingeley's strong statements about Walker.
Dr. Cibbarelli stated that while a certain about of
disorganization was anticipated, he has confident in Walker
School and the principal and that on balance things are
moving on schedule. Dr. Cibbarelli stressed that the pairing
plan has educational integrity.
Mr. Hingeley stated that his comments reflected his
personal experiences as a parent and should not be taken as a
reflection on the entire program.
Council indicated its support of the program at Walker
School.
Mr. Pezzoli requested that Council authorize the School
Board to spend the funds previously appropriated, though not
scheduled to be used for two years, in order to add two
modular classrooms at Walker.
Ms. Waters questioned why modular classrooms were planned
rather than permanent structures and Mr. Jim Dunbar,
Assistant Superintendent for Schools, stated that permanent
structures would be more expensive and the modular classrooms
look permanent, are commonly used, can be prepared quickly
and can. be moved from one site to another.
On motion by Mr. Buck, seconded by Mr. Towe, the
Council authorized the Schools to move forward the
appropriation for the modular classrooms at Walker, with Rev.
Edwards absent for the vote.
Mr. Pezzoli stated that the Virginia School Board
Association has reported favorably on the number and quality
of applications submitted for the superintendent's position.
The meeting was,_-a-d-~j--o-u-rned.
~~~
Pres' ent C k ~`
COUNCIL CHAMBER - January 17, 1989
Council met in regular session on this date with the
following members present: Mr. Buck, Rev.
