75 <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Friday, March 5, <br />1999 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Jefferson School, 4th Street, N.W. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Budget work session with School Board <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (signed) <br /> <br />JEFFERSON SCHOOL - March 5, 1999 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: <br />Mr. Caravati, Mr. Cox, Ms. DaugherB,, Ms. Richards. Absent: Mr. Toscano. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ed Gillespie, Finance Director for the Schools, said that proposed salary <br />ranges for teachers are higher than other regions and competitive with all neighboring <br />school districts. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ron Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, said that raising <br />teacher salaries has been a major priority of the School Board and SuPerintendent. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Daugherty, Mr. Hutchinson said that the <br />benefit package for school employees is excellent as compared to other systems. Mr. <br />Hutchinson noted that Charlottesville School's supplement for a master's degree remains <br />lower than some others in the area, and this will be looked at in the near future. Mr. <br />Hutchinson said that two teachers are being added at Walker, one teacher added at <br />Venable and one interpreter added. <br /> <br />Mr. Cox asked if there is any fat in the system that could be cut. <br /> <br /> Dr. William Symons, Superintendent of City Schools, said that there are areas in <br />the school system where he would like to make cuts and increase salaries, but he feels he <br />needs the support of the SChool Board and Council when the community reacts to these <br />cuts in order to be successful. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Richards about low salaries and ranges for <br />instructional aides, Dr. Symons said that the salary for instructional aides in the City <br />school system in higher than others in the region. Dr. Symons said that the salaries of the <br />instructional aides need to be looked at in .relation to other positions and differences in <br />job duties need to be addresses. Dr~ Symons added that some aides probably make what <br />they should given their job. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox asked that more information be provided to Council on the alternative <br />education and special education programs. <br /> <br /> It was agreed that the work session, would be continued on March 19th. <br /> <br /> The meeting was adjourned. <br />Preside~-~ <br /> <br /> <br />
