203 <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Friday, September <br />10, 1999 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Charlottesville High School Performing Arts Center. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENI)A IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon meeting with School Board <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (signed) <br /> <br />CHA~TTESVILLE HIGH'SCHOOL- September I0, 1999 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: <br />Mr. Caravati, Ms. Daugherty, Mr. Toscano. Absent: Mr. Cox and Ms. Richards. <br /> <br /> Mr. Robert Thompson, Principal of Charlottesville High School, said that <br />enrollment at CHS is up to 1,208 students~ 61 being out-of-district students. Mr. <br />Thompson said more out-of-district students could have been taken had there been room <br />available. Mr. Thompson said 18 advanced placement classes are offered at CHS and the <br />school has two basic goals: increasing and improving Standards of Learning (SOL) <br />scores and providing a safe and secure environment that is conducive for Iearning. Mr. <br />Thompson said steps have been taken to increase security at CHS and the school system <br />will be working with a consultant on improving safety in all City schools. Mr. Thompson <br />said new offerings at CHS this year include a dance class and African-American history. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano asked if the schools are thinking through the issue of improving <br />teachers' abilities in the area of technology, and Ms. Artetta Dimberg, Assistant <br />Superintendent of Schools, said that the schools offer ongoing staff development, but k is <br />a problem. <br /> <br /> Mr~ Ron Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, said it is very difficult <br />to find people to even apply for teaching positions in the areas of math and science. <br /> <br /> Mr. W. T. Lewis, Director of Educational Services, said staff are exploring ways <br />to encourage students from U.
