160 <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE HELD ON Friday, August 25, <br />2000 AT 12:00 noon IN THE Basement Conference Room. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon meeting with School Board <br /> <br />BY O~ER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox (signed) <br /> <br />BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM - August 25, 2000 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: <br />Mr. Caravati, Mr. Lynch, Ms. Richards, Mr. Toscano. Absent: Mr. Cox. <br /> <br /> Dr. William Symons said that the meeting will focus on the School's Strategic <br />Plan. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Campbell, Chair of the School Board, reviewed school information and <br />said that 4,500 students are enr, olled and the schools are fully staffed. <br /> <br /> Dr. Symons reviewed the goals of the Strategic Plan: 1) To provide quality <br />teaching and learning in every classroom so that each child is provided a supportive <br />learning environment and challenging learning experiences. 2) To support in students <br />and staff the development ora process to ensure an attractive, safe and orderly school <br />climate which is environmentally responsible and contributes m effective learning. <br />3) To ensure that throughout the school division there is strong instructional leadership <br />with a primary focus on instructional improvements. <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati asked how the School Board plans to attack the issue of the pre- <br />school program over the coming year. <br /> <br /> Dr, Symons said that a group is working on what kind of pre-school program we <br />should have and is scheduled to report back in November. Dr. Symons said he does not <br />think the focus should be on the building but on the type of program first. <br /> <br />Mr. Toscano said he does not see a lot about results in the Strategic Plan. <br /> <br /> There was a general discussion among Councilors and School Board members <br />about the problems of student mobility and the need for increased social agency <br />involvement in students' lives. <br /> <br />160 <br /> <br /> <br />
