Absent: Dr. Gunter. <br /> <br /> Dr. Vincent Cibbarelli, Superintendent of Schools, stated <br />that the transfer of school bus operation to the Transit <br />Department of the City had worked very smoothly and with a <br />cooperative spirit. <br /> <br /> Ms. Helen Poore, Transit Manager, stated that similar <br />bus routes as before were being used, new buses were being <br />purchased, two-way radios had been installed, drivers had been <br />certified in the Driver's Assistance Techniques Program, and <br />the major focus had been on safety. Ms. Poore stated that <br />problem areas included vehicles passing stopped buses, behavior <br />problems on buses and that there was no. permanent site for <br />school buses. <br /> <br /> Dr. Joseph Mooney, School Board member, stated that the <br />Board had considered the issue of seat belts on buses but <br />found that most data indicated that buses were safer without <br />them. Dr. Mooney stated that most studies found that driver <br />safety was the most important factor. <br /> <br /> Mr. JohnPezzoli, School Board member, stated that there <br />was concern that some special education students were spending <br />over an hour on the buses. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jim Dunbar Of School Administration, s.tated that the <br />problem was being dealt with and hopefully would be improved <br />next year, but added that it may be a financial decision. <br /> <br /> Dr. Mooney recommended documenting the time the students <br />spend on the buses and their specific handicap. <br /> <br />Mrs. Gleason suggested looking into contracting with JAUNT. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dunbar stated that some contracting with JAUNT is done <br />but it may need to be expanded. <br /> <br /> Mr. Tom McLernon of School Administration, stated that <br />parents are reimbursed for mileage if they help with trans- <br />portation of handicapped stUdents. <br /> <br /> Dr. Cibbarelli requested that Council appropriate $S0,000 <br />to fund a demographic study of City schools which would take <br />into account population projections and programs and which <br />could be implemented the following year. <br /> <br /> <br />
