64 <br />GENERAL ORDINANCES 253 <br />this section will apply only to main 4" soil stack in buildings up <br />to 4 stories in height and the number of such fixtures shall not <br />exceed four. <br />Fixtures located more than 4 feet from main or branch waste <br />lines are to be back vented except as specified elsewhere. <br />All openings left in soil, waste or vent pipes for any purpose <br />and not used in finishing shall be closed so as to be gas and water <br />tight and in case of vent pipe outlets where they are liable to <br />hold water, they shall be connected to waste. <br />Sec. 491(10) . Drains. <br />House drain from a point three feet outside of building to one <br />foot or more above roof are to be constructed of medium or bet- <br />ter cast iron pipe and fittings, not less than four inches in diam- <br />eter if horizontal and three inches vertically and shall have a <br />minimum fall of one-eighth of an inch to a foot and when above <br />ground shall be supported by strong hangers. All waste and <br />vent pipes underground are to be of cast iron or lead. <br />Where pipes pass through roofs they shall be flashed with an <br />approved roof flange placed on and made tight. <br />Sanitary "T's" or Crosses may be used in all vertical lines of <br />soil, and waste pipes where fixtures are close enough to permit <br />use of same. Sanitary "T's" will also be permitted in horizon- <br />tal runs when used upright and directly under fixtures. Dou- <br />ble "Y's" will be permitted in horizontal runs. Changes in di- <br />rection must be made with "Y's" and 1/8 bends. Four inch or <br />larger pipes below or above ground shall have a "Y" fitting with <br />4 inch cleanout inserted in ends and on main lines not over thirty <br />feet apart and three inch lines or smaller shall have "Y's" with <br />two inch cleanouts not over twenty feet apart and also at ends <br />for the purpose of cleaning. Cleanouts must be accessible, ex- <br />tending from "Y" fittings either straight ahead or from branch <br />to surface where underground in a straight line or when other- <br />wise not accessible. <br />The use of cast iron offsets to offset up to six inches and cast <br />in one piece when used in vertical waste lines is also permitte i <br />and offsets greater than six inches may be used on vertical vent <br />lines. <br />254 CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY CODE <br />The use of heel outlet and side outlet fittings must be approved <br />by the Inspector. <br />Waste pipes must be of either cast iron, galvanized wrought <br />iron, galvanized mild steel or lead and of the following sizes: <br />WaterClosets ...................................... <br />4„ <br />SlopSinks .......................................... <br />3" <br />Wash Trays ......................................... <br />2" <br />Bath Tubs .......................................... <br />12„ <br />Shower Stalls (single) ................................ <br />2" <br />Sinks............................................... <br />1y,r <br />Wall Urinals ........................................ <br />1/" <br />Stall Urinals ........................................ <br />3" <br />Basins (single) ...................................... <br />1%/„ <br />If screw pipe is used the fitting for same are to be galvanized <br />recessed drainage fittings. Fittings for screwed vents, other than <br />wet vents, may be regular galvanized malleable fittings. <br />Waste pipes under floors of concrete or other inaccessible ma- <br />terial shall be not less than two inches where over ten feet hor- <br />izontal. <br />Joints in cast iron pipe and fitting shall be so filled with oakum <br />and lead or leadite, hand calked to make them gas and water <br />tight. <br />A brass floor flange shall be used in connecting earthenware <br />water closets to outlet pipe and so fitted as to secure a water and <br />air tight joint, and when set on tile or cement floors, putty, plas- <br />ter Paris or cement may be used. White lead or varnish to be <br />used with gasket and flange. <br />Waste connections to slop sinks to be as above or by calking <br />pedestal of slop sink into waste pipe hub. <br />Connections for out door closets to be made by calking spigot <br />end of bowl or trap into hub of waste pipe. <br />All traps to be plain full bore traps, iron, lead or brass. Fix- <br />ture traps are to be generally "P" traps and where "S" traps <br />are necessary they are to be vented as directed by the Plumbing <br />Inspector. No traps are to be less than 1Y2" inside diameter, or <br />1'%" if they are brass traps. All traps 2" and less in diameter <br />are to have trap screws. <br />GENERAL ORDINANCES 255 <br />Lead waste pipes are to be of weight known in commerce as <br />"D". Traps and bends to be of weights known as Standard. <br />Ferrules are to be of brass, extra heavy and four inches long. <br />Cleanouts shall be of acceptable material and construction. <br />Brass pipe for traps and fixture connections to be not less <br />than 17 gauge. <br />Vertical waste pipes to receive discharge from not more than <br />8 sinks, baths, lavatories, wash trays or similar fixtures shall <br />be not less than 2" diameter and with branches not less than 1%". <br />Connections between cast iron and lead pipes to be made with <br />brass ferrules wiped onto lead pipe and calked into cast iron <br />hubs. <br />Connections between cast iron and screwed pipe to be made <br />with cast iron fitting tapped and threaded or with screw pipe <br />couplings calked into cast iron hubs. <br />Connections between screwed pipe and lead pipe to be made <br />with brass soldering nipples, wiped onto lead pipe. <br />Connections between lead waste pipes, brass waste pipes and <br />traps and lead pipes to be made with wiped joints and between <br />brass waste pipes and traps and screwed pipe to be made with <br />recessed sweat bushings, or metal to metal ground joint connec- <br />tions. Packed slip joint connections will not be permitted on <br />the sewer side of traps. <br />Lead drum traps to receive waste from bath tubs, or bath <br />tubs and lavatories, need not be back vented when within 4 feet <br />of main waste pipe and where no water closets are located above <br />such bath tub or lavatories. In cases where this distance ex- <br />ceeds 4 feet the lead drum trap must be back vented by 1%" vent <br />pipe. <br />Sec. 491 (11) . Open drains and vent pipes. <br />Cellar drains and area drains will be permitted when they are <br />connected with an approved back water trap in connection with <br />a deep seal trap. <br />Drains into which the washing from automobiles or other <br />liquids or substances of such nature as would be likely to stop <br />up the sewers into which such drain empties, must be properly <br />constructed and operated with sand trap; and no person, firm or <br />256 CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY CODE <br />corporation shall discharge into the sewers any substances of <br />such nature as will stop up any sewer within the City. <br />Cellar drains and sand traps will not be required to be vented <br />when within fifteen feet of main or branch waste pipe, which <br />extends through roof. <br />Where a fixture is allowed to discharge into an open drain, <br />a trap, but no vent will be necessary, but the waste pipe must <br />not exceed fifteen feet in length unless approved by the in- <br />spector. <br />The fixtures must be connected with sewer where sewer is <br />available. <br />Sec. 491 (12) . Downspout connections. <br />The connection of downspouts to storm water sewers are to <br />be made with cast iron pipe extending above ground and calked <br />into trap. <br />Sec. 491 (13) . Refrigerator waste and steam exhausts. <br />Waste pipe from refrigerators in which provisions are stored, <br />shall not be connected directly with the drainage system, but <br />shall waste into an open pan, or over a properly trapped and <br />water supplied fixture. <br />No steam, exhaust, blow -off or drip pipe from a steam boiler <br />shall connect directly with the sewer or with any soil, drain, <br />waste or vent pipe. <br />Sec. 491(14) . Replacement of old fixtures. <br />When new fixtures are introduced on old work, it will not be <br />compulsory on the part of the owner to back vent same, but they <br />shall have non -syphoning traps of approved type and in chang- <br />ing closets, only syphon closets with tanks will be allowed. <br />Where there are no closets above; it will not be necessary to <br />back vent fixtures, but the soil or waste pipe must be in every <br />case extended (not less than two inches in size) the required <br />distance above the roof, or into other vent pipe above highest <br />fixture. On repair of old work, in lieu of back vent pipe, a <br />non -syphoning trap of approved type when connected with a <br />wash basin, sink, urinal or wash tray, which is not more than <br />fifteen feet from a main, will be permitted. <br />1 <br />1 <br />1 <br />1 <br />
