AMENDMENT AN RE-NACTMENT OF SECTION 219 OF THE CITY CODE;

<br />BE IT ORDAINED, BY THE COUNCIL OF CHARLOTTESVILLE,That section 219 of the
<br />
<br />Charlottesville City code be amended to read as follows;
<br />
<br />Sec. 219. ELECTION AND TERM.
<br />
<br />The Council shall elect, at the same time and in the same manner as other officers
<br />
<br />of the City art elected, a Chief of Police and as many patrolmen as may be deemed
<br />
<br />necessary, whose term of office stall be for two years unless sooner removed, provided,
<br />
<br />however, that the Council may, by a majority vote of all the members of the council,
<br />
<br />refuse to elect a Chief of Police, and may also refuse to elect any or all of the
<br />
<br />patrolmen, after which, refusal the Mayor shall, upon the recommendation of the Police
<br />
<br />Committee, of the Council, employ from month to month at the salary provided for such
<br />
<br />office, such patrolmen as he may deem necessary, and select monthly from among the
<br />
<br />patrolmen so employed, one of their number who, in addition to being subject to patrol
<br />
<br />duty, shall act as Chief of Police and receive during such appointment the salary
<br />
<br />provided for the office of Chief of Pulice, provided further, that the Council may by
<br />
<br />a majority vote, at any time, elect any or all of said officers for the unexpired
<br />
<br />term.

<br />AMENDMENT AND RE-ENACTMENT OF SECTION 321 OF THE CITY CODE:
<br />
<br />BE IT ORDAINED, BY THE COUNCIL OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, That Sec.321 of the City Code
<br />
<br />be amended and re-enacted to .read as follows;
<br />
<br />Sec. 321. Buildings within the Fire Limits.
<br />
<br />No person shall erect, or cause; to be erected, within the fire limits as herein.-
<br />
<br />before defined, any building or buildings, or any addition to any existing building,
<br />
<br />unless the walls thereof are composed entirely of brick, stone,or concrete or other
<br />
<br />material equally substantial permanent and fireproff, except that the outer walls
<br />
<br />of any building within said fire limits and not fronting on Main Street may be
<br />
<br />composed of what is commonly known as trick veneering, or metal, and the roof or
<br />
<br />roofs of any and all buildings within said fire lindto shall be covered with slate,
<br />
<br />tile, metal or other material which, stall be deemed fireproof, provided thea a
<br />
<br />wooden building, or a wooden addition to an existing building, costing fifty dollars
<br />
<br />or less may be erected upon the rear of any property provided a special permit be
<br />
<br />first obtained from the Council.

<br />And provided further, that a wooden addition
<br />
<br />costing more than fifty dollars may be made to an existing building if the owner,
<br />
<br />having first obtained the written approval of the local board of underwriters and
<br />
<br />the written consent of the owners of the adjacant property, shall, at a regular
<br />
<br />meeting of the City Council, present a petition in the manner prescribed by section
<br />
<br />322 and be granted a permit by the affirmative vote of two-thrids of all the
<br />
<br />members elected to the Council, which vote, with the names of the Councilmen
<br />
<br />delivering them, shall be entered upon the; minutes,
<br />
<br />No shingle roof shallbe put upon any building; within the fire limits, either
<br />
<br />in repairing an old or constricting a new one.
