Bakers. <br />Each person or firm conducting the business of baking shall <br />pay a specific license tax of $25 per annum. Not transferable. <br />No pro rata. <br />20. Barbers. <br />On every license to a barber the tax shall be $5.00 for each <br />chair in excess of one. <br />21. Bill Posters. <br />Rach bill paster shall pay a license tax of twenty dollars <br />($20) for one year. All persons who post notices, bills and <br />labels for compensation, shall be construed as bill posters. No <br />pro rata. Any person taking out this license may have the <br />privilege of distributing advertisements as defined in section 2. <br />22. Billiard or Pool. <br />On every license to keep a billiard or pool saloon the tax shall <br />be sixty-four dollars ($64) for one table, and an additional tax <br />of thirty-two dollars ($32) for the second table, and sixteen <br />dollars ($16) additional for each table in excess of two. <br />23. Blacksmith and Wheelwright Shops. <br />On every person or firm conducting a blacksmith shop the <br />license tax shall be five dollars ($5) for the first anvil and two► <br />dollars and fifty cents ($2.50) for each additional anvil. On <br />every person or firm conducting a wheelright shop the tax shall <br />be five dollars ($5) . <br />24. Bootblacks. <br />For each chair or stand accommodating not more than one <br />person the license shall he $2 and when a bench is used the li- <br />cense sh111 he ,$2 for enc•h pair of foot rests, for year or any <br />Dart of year. <br />25. Bowling Saloon, Tenpin Alley or Boxball. <br />On every license permitting a bowling saloon, tenpin alley or <br />boxball to be kept in this city, whether a charge is made for play- <br />ing or not, where the public is invited, the tax shall be twenty <br />dollars ($20) for each alley. No pro rata. <br />26. Brokers in Stocks, Bonds, Bills or Futures. <br />On every license to a person or firm to conduct the business <br />of stock, bond, note or hill broker, the tax shall be fifty dollars <br />($50), but brokers in futures shall pay a license tax of three <br />hundred dollars ($300). <br />27. Building and Loan Associations. <br />Every building and loan association having its head office in <br />this city shall pay a specific license tax of one hundred dollars <br />($100). <br />2 8. Carnival. <br />On every carnival exhibiting within tents $350 per week. <br />'Phis license does not cover baby racks, knife racks or like games <br />of chance not prohibited by law, or anything specifically taxed <br />by any other section of this ordinance. <br />29. Chiropodists, etc. <br />Every chiropodist, manicurist or hair dresser shall pay a spe- <br />cific license tax of $10 per annum. Not transferable. No pro <br />rata. <br />3 0. Cider. <br />No cider of any sort shall be sold by any person or firm within <br />the limits of the City of Charlottesville unless the person or firm <br />selling or offering for sale the same shall have paid a specific <br />license tax of fifteen hundred dollars ($1500). No pro rata. <br />Persons or firms selling cider at wholesale to merchants shall <br />be required to pay the usual merchant's license tax only. <br />Any violation of this section shall be punished by a fine of <br />not less than five dollars ($5), nor more than fifty dollars ($50), <br />or confinement in jail not exceeding three months, or both fine <br />and imprisonment, as in the discretion of the Police justice or <br />the Court may seem proper. <br />This ordinance shall not apply to the sale of sweet cider sold <br />by the person growing the fruit from which the cider was mai <br />31. Cleaning and Pressing. <br />E ach person or firm conducting a cleaning and pressing estab. <br />lishment shall pay a specific license tax of $10 per annum. Not <br />transferable. No pro rata. <br />32. Common Criers. <br />On every license to a common crier the tax shall be twenty. <br />five dollars ($25) and he shall not as such crier, give any evi. <br />dence of sale or title to the purchaser. This license may be pro <br />rated for a period of not less than six months. <br />3 S. Contractors.' <br />Any person, firm or corporation accepting orders or con. <br />tracts for doing any work on or in any building or structure re. <br />quiring the use of paint, stone, brick, mortar, cement, wood, <br />structural iron or steel, sheet -iron, galvanized iron, metallic <br />piping, tin, lead, electric wiring or other metals or any other <br />building or decorating material; or who shall accept contracts <br />to do any paving, or curbing on sidewalks or streets, public or <br />private property, using asphalt, brick, stone, cement, wood or <br />any composition, or who shall accept an order for or contract <br />to excavate earth, rock or other material for foundations or any <br />other purpose, or who shall accept an order or contract to con. <br />struct any sewer of stone, brick, terra cotta, or other material, <br />shall be deemed a contractor. The specific license tax on every <br />person, firm or corporation for the privilege of conducting the <br />business of contractor or builder in this city, as described above, <br />shall be ten dollars ($10) on the first thous;urd dollars or less <br />of material purchased or used, and an additional tax of ten <br />cents on every hundred dollars of the amount of materials pur- <br />chased or used in excess of one thousand dollars; said addi- <br />tional tax shall be paid quarterly, and every person, firm or <br />corporation is hereby required to report under oath to the Corn- <br />missioner of Revenue the amount of purcha�c on the first day <br />of August, November, February and May of each year and pay <br />the amount due on the dates mentioned, and failure to do so <br />shall be considered as doing business witi'Mit a license, and <br />shall be fined not less than $2.50 nor nlowe than $5 for each day <br />in default. <br />34. Corn Doctors, etc. <br />F,very corn, cancer, eve, or other itinerant doctor or optician <br />shall pay a specific license tax of twenty-five dollars ($25) per <br />annum. Not transferable. No pro rata. <br />3 5. Creamery. <br />F,ach person, firm or corporation conducting a creamery shall <br />pay a specific license tax of $25 per annum. Not transferable. <br />No pro rata. <br />36. Dance Halls. <br />On every license to a person or firm to conduct a dance hall <br />in which dancing is to he allowed, where an admission fee is <br />charged or a charge is made for participating in such dancing, <br />the tax shall be $50, and no such license shall be granted until <br />such person or persons shall have secured the consent of the <br />Mayor, who shall satisfy himself that the person or persons ap, <br />plying are proper persons to conduct such hell, and that the lo• <br />cation is suitable for such purpose, and it is further provided <br />that any such dance hall shall be subject to such rules and reg' <br />ulations as are now or may hereafter be prescril,ed by the Coun' <br />cil. Daguerrean and Photographic Artists and Canvassers <br />for Copying Pictures. <br />The specific license tax on any person engaged in business ars <br />as <br />a daguerrean or photographic artist, shall be thirty <br />Pc <br />itures of <br />($30).
