IV <br />385 <br />(a) In the bukldings hereafter erected, except private dwellings, which are <br />used aboie the first floor for business purposes or for public assemblage, or for any <br />purpose 4�atever if over three (3) stories high, the stair shafts shall be separately <br />and continuously enclosed by incombustible partitions. Elevator shafts in all buildings <br />hereafter erected shall be enclosed in the same manner. The partitions shall be con- <br />structer of brick or other fire -resistive material approved by the City Manager or other <br />designated official, and all mortar used in the construction shall be Portland Cement Mortar <br />No hollar partition shall be less than eight (-8) inches thick, and no ot►ier solid parti- <br />tion less than four (4) inches thick. <br />(b) All door openings in elevator and required stair encloures shall be <br />protected by fire doors mounted with wrought iron or ateel hardware and sha,ll be securely <br />attached to the wall or partition, or to substantial incombustible frames anchored thereto. <br />If glass panels be used in such doors, they shall be of wired glass not exceeding seven <br />hundred twenty (720) square inches in area. Interior shaft windows shall not be permitted. <br />(c) Doors opening into stairway shafts shall swing in the direction of <br />exit travel, shall be self-closing and shall be at least forty-fourt44) inches wide. <br />(d) The enclosure walls for all elevators shafts shall extend at least <br />three (3) feet above the roof, and at least three -fourth of the area shall be covered with <br />a skylight constructed as specified in Section 18, <br />See, 18. Skylights over stairway and elevator shafts. <br />Where a stairway, elevator or dumb waiter shaft extends through the roof <br />and is covered by a skylight, the skylight shall be constructed with incombustible frame <br />and sash, glazed with ordinary thin glass, and shall be protected by a galvanized <br />steel wire screen with a mesh not exceeding one inch, and the wire not smaller than No. <br />12 gauge. The screen s'risll have metal surrports and be placed not less than 6 inches <br />above the skylight. Instead of a skylight, a window may be placed in the side of the shaft <br />above the roof which is farthest remaved from a property line. The window shall have in- <br />combustible frame and sash, and be glazed with thin glass. <br />Sec. 19. Fire escapes from buildinCe of threestories and over. <br />It shall be the duty of the owner of every factory, workshop, mill, sal -Rill <br />or place where the manufacture of goods of any kind is carried on, hotel, school building, <br />college, hospital, orphan asylum, mecaritile establishment and office building of over three <br />stories in height, or where as many as fifteen Persons are employed, lodged, entertained or <br />Iinstructed above the second story of such building, than of three stories in height, and <br />theaters and public places of amusement, regardless of height, to provide for the safe <br />exit of the occupants thereof in case of fire by the erection, construction or maintenance <br />LY <br />in good condition of fire escapes of the mo t improved modern design asdescribed in this <br />SeCtion, <br />The owner of owners of any building uppn which a fire escape is erected shall <br />�eeP the same in good repair and properly painted. <br />(a) Location. All fire escapes shall be 11cated when practicable on dead <br />*all or on a pbir between windows. <br />(b) Fire escapes in new buildings shall be easily accessible from the inside <br />of the building in which they are placed by means of unobstructed corridors or passage - <br />Wags• All doors leading to fire escapes shall have clear wired glass labeled "Fire Escapes" <br />in letters three (3) inches high and shall be provided with locks not requiring keys. <br />
