AN ORDINANCE ENACTING A NEW SECTION TO THE CITY CODE OF 1932, DESIGNATED"SECTION <br />258A, MARATHON OR WALKING CONTEST." <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville that a new section <br />be enacted and added to the City Code of 1932, which shall read as follows: <br />SEC. 258A. MARATHON OR WALKING CONTEST. <br />(1) It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation engaged in the <br />operation of any marathon or walking contest , marathon dance, walkathon or other <br />similar physical endurance contest, performance or exhibition held in this City, <br />to operate or conduct the same at any time. <br />(2) It shall be unlawful for any person to participate in any marathon or <br />walking contest, marathon dance, walkathon or other similar physical endurance contest, <br />performance or exhibition in this City. <br />(3) Any person, firm or corporation violating the provisions of this section, <br />shall upon conviction, be liable to a fine of not less than twenty-five dollars <br />($25.00) nor more than one hundred dollars (1100.00) for each offense, and in addition, <br />may in the discretion of the Court trying the case, be confined in jail for a period <br />of not more than thirty (30) days for each offense. , <br />This ordinance shall be in force from its passage and all ordinances, or parts of ordinances, <br />in conflict herewith are hereby repealed. <br />Adopted by the Council June 3, 1935. <br />Ayes: Mr. Fife, Dr. Haden, Mr. Huff, <br />Mr. Jessup and Mr. TvV mn. <br />Noes: No . <br />aL A <br />d-� <br />Clerk es en <br />AN ORDINANCE ENACTING SECTION 368 A OF THE CODE OF 1932 ENTITLED <br />"SW M PING POOLS". <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville that Section 368 A of the Code <br />of 1932 is hereby enacted to read as follows: <br />(1) DEFINITIONS Any public swimming pool, or bathing place, with water sufficiently deep <br />for complete immersion of the body and used collectively by numbers of persons, together with the <br />buildings and equipment pertaining to such places. I (2) PERMITS. <br />(a) No person, firm, corporation, or institution shall construct, add to, or modify, or <br />operate any public swimming pool without first obtaining a permit from the Health Officer. <br />Application for a permit shall be accompanied by detailed maps, drawings, and descriptions of the <br />structure, appurtenances, methods of and operation; description of the source of water supply, the <br />methods of purification, and any other information required by the Health Officer. The Health Officer, <br />in cooperation with the City Engineer, shall determine whether or not the proposed pool may be <br />expected to comply with the requirements of this Ordinance, and if so shall grant the application <br />for permit. <br />(b) The Health Officer, or his representative, may enter the premises of any swimming <br />pool at any time for the purpose of inspection. Reports of inspections may be published or posted, <br />at the discretion of the Health Officer. <br />(e) Any perrdt may be revoked or suspended at any time by the Health Officer, if he finds <br />the swimming pool is being conducted in an unsanitary manner or is dangerous to the public health. <br />(3) DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION. <br />(a) Swimming pools shall be lined with such material that the walls and floors shall be <br />impervious to water, smooth and easily cleaned. The lining shall be white, or a light color, <br />preferably tile or glazed brick. The light color shall not be obtained by painting. <br />(b) Slope of floor shall not be more than one foot in fifteen feet. Minimum depth at the <br />deep end shall be six feet. The depth shall be marked at frequent intervals. <br />(c) Scum gutters shall be proitided on all sides of the pool and should be recessed into <br />the wall, any projection should not extend out more than two inches. Zhe gutters shall be of such <br />depth that the shimmer's hands will not touch the bottom. There shall be a drainage outlet at least <br />every ten feet. <br />(d) Steps and ladders shall be provided at both sides of the deep end of the pool, and at <br />the shallow end if its depth is more than two feet from the runway. <br />' <br />(e) Runways at least four feet wide shall extend entirely around the pool, and shall be of <br />non -slippery material, but easily cleaned. They shall drain either away from or towards the pool. <br />The edge of the pool at the junction of the runways shall be rounded. <br />(f) Location of Inlet and Outlet pipes shall be such as to provide the maximum efficiency <br />of complete circulation and displacement which is practicable. <br />(g) The size of the pool shall be proportioned to the expected load, according to the <br />recommendations of the American Public Health Association. <br />(h) At least one sanitary, water -flushed toilet shall be provided for each 40 women and <br />at least one toilet and one urinal for each 60 men. <br />(i) Adequate showers, the location of which shall be approved by the Health Officer, with <br />hot and cold water, shall be provided. There shall be at least one for each 40 bathers at time of <br />maximum load. <br />
