OF <br />GAME & INLAND FISHERIES DEPARTMENT OF GAME AND INLAND FISHERIES. <br />IT WAS MOVED BY MR.WEINBERG, SECONDED BY MR. DAVIS, THAT RADIO STATION <br />WCHV BE ADVISED THAT COUNCIL COULD NOT ACQUIESCE TO THE REQUEST THAT ITS <br />MEETINGS BE TAPE RECORDED FOR SUBSEQUENT BROADCAST, SINCE IT WAS THE OPINION <br />REQUEST TO TAPE RECORD THAT IN SO DOING THE PUBLIC WOULD BE HANDICAPED IN PRESENTING ITS PROBLEMS <br />COUNCIL MEETINGS DENIED <br />TO THE COUNCIL AND, ALSO, IT WAS BELIEVED SUCH ARRANGEMENT WOULD TEND TO <br />HINDER AN ORDERLY CONDUCT OF COUNCIL MEETINGS. <br />A LETTER FROM THE IX -VIRGINIA CORPORATION WITH RESPECT TO THE WIDENING <br />AND CONSTRUCTION OF SIDEWALKS ALONG WARE STREET WAS PRESENTED. THE CITY MANAGER <br />MATTER RE: WIDENING <br />& CONSTRUCTING SIDEWALKS RECOMMENDED THAT IF THE OWNERS OF PROPERTY ON THE EAST SIDE OF WARE STREET, <br />ON WARE STREET • <br />BETWEEN GARRETT STREET AND IX'S PLANT, WOULD DONATE FIVE FEET OF LAND FOR <br />STREET PURPOSES, THE CITY WOULD WIDEN THE STREET AND CONSTRUCT A SIDEWALK <br />AT ITS OWN EXPENSE, A MOTION BY MR. FORBES, SECONDED BY MR. DAVIS, THAT THE <br />ABOVE RECOMMENDATION BE APPROVED, WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br />THE FOLLOWING COMMUNICATION WAS PRESENTED: <br />APRIL 6, 1953 <br />TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL <br />CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA <br />ORDERED PLACED ON THE DOCKET OF THE MEETING OF APRIL 20, 19539 AT WHICH TIME <br />THE COUNCIL WILL WLECOME ANY SUGGESTIONS THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WOULD CARE <br />TO MAKE IN REGARD TO IT, WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br />A LETTER WITH RESPECT TO THE CONSOLIDATION OF CERTAIN TRAINS ON THE <br />FLATTER RE: CONSOLIDATION SOUTHERN RAILROAD WAS PRESENTED. A MOTION DULY MADE AND SECONDED, THAT THE <br />TRAINS ON SOUTHERN R. R. <br />REFERRED TO COMMITTEE MAYOR APPOINT A COMMITTEE CONSISTING OF THE MAYOR, THE CITY MANAGER AND THE CITY <br />ATTORNEY TO STUDY THE MATTER AND TO TAKE SUCH ACTION AS THEY MAY DEEM NECESSARY, <br />WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED, THE MAYOR THEREBY APPOINTED THE FOREGOING AS MEMBERS <br />OF THE COMMITTEE. <br />ON MOTION THE MEETING ADJOURNED. <br />CLERK <br />PRESIDENT <br />GENTLEMEN: <br />I HAVE JUST BEEN GIVEN A REPORT BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE FIRE <br />DEPARTMENT WHICH SHOWS THAT SINCE SEPTEMBER 1, 1952 THROUGH MARCH 119 <br />1953 OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED AND ANSWERED 122 HOUSE FIRE CALLS. 39 <br />COMMUNICATION RE• <br />OR 32% OF THESE CALLS WERE OUTSIDE OF THE CORPORATE LIMITS. THERE WERE <br />FIRE PROTECTION OUTSIDE <br />OTHER CALLS MADE BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR GRASS, FIRST AID, ETC., WHICH ARE <br />CITY LIMITS, <br />NOT INCLUDED IN THE ABOVE FIGURES AND WHICH ARE IN THE MOST PART CITY CALLS. <br />THE PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT IS TO ADVISE YOU OF THE FOREGOING AND TO <br />POINT OUT THAT THE NEED FOR FIRE PROTECTION OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS HAS <br />GROWN TO SUCH A DEGREE THAT IN MY OPINION IT SHOULD NO LONGER BE UNDERTAKEN <br />OR EXPECTED OF OUR EXISTING CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT. <br />NEEDLESS TO SAY ALL FIRE CALLS ARE EXPENSIVE AND IT FOLLOWS THAT CALLS <br />MADE OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS REQUIRE MORE TRAVEL AND TIME AND ARE THEREFORE <br />IN THE MOST PART MORE EXPENSIVE THAN CALLS MADE WITHIN THE CITY. <br />WE DO NOT WANT TO BE CONSIDERED AS NOT BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS, HOWEVER, I <br />PERSONALLY DO NOT SEE HOW WE AS OFFICIALS OF THE CITY CAN CONTINUE TO EXPEND <br />THE CITY TAXPAYERS MONEY FOR FIRE PROTECTION OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS AND <br />AT THE SAME TIME ALSO SUBJECT THE CITY TAXPAYER TO THE RISKS INVOLVED BOTH <br />FROM THE STANDPOINT OF VOSTLY ACCIDENTS AND THE POSSIBI1111TY OF HAVING A PART <br />OF THE CITY EQUIPMENT OUTSIDE THE CITY WHEN IT MAY BE NEEDED TO SAVE THE TAX- <br />PAYERS HOME OR PROPERTY. <br />• <br />I, THEREFORE, RESPECTFULLY SUGGEST AND REQUEST THAT YOU STUDY THIS MATTER <br />AND ADVISE ME WHAT ACTION, IF ANY, YOU WISH TAKEN AT THIS TIME. <br />RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, <br />JIM BOWEN (SIGNED) <br />JEB:RB CITY MANAGER <br />A MOTION BY MR.
