Mr. Luke Scruby, a Western Albemarle High School student, supported the <br />monument and asked is it not always better to support free expression rather than silence <br />it. <br /> <br /> Mr. Kennon Williams, an architect, said he feels the proposed design is a <br />wonderful expression of modem sensibilities, and will provide an opportunity for art. <br />Mr. Williams said he supports it as a political vehicle. <br /> <br /> Mr. Eric Grekecki, a Charlottesville High School Student, said the sharing of ideas <br />is what learning is all about, and he thinks the monument is a wonderful idea. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jack Sorman, Cleveland Avenue, a Charlottesville High School student, said <br />that while vulgarities may occur on the monument, they already do now in other places. <br /> <br /> A senior at Albemarle High School said that the school newspaper would not <br />publish a poem she wrote. She said there are always going to be negative people, but <br />others should not penalized for actions by them· <br /> <br /> Mr. Ed Pearson, a Nelson County resident, said he saw a similar bOard erected in <br />the western part of the country and he thinks it is a marvelous thing. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jack Wilson, 317 Monte Vista Avenue, said he would like to embrace the <br />positives, but is concerned about vandalisrr~ Mr. Wilson said he hopes the monument <br />will be a success and feels it is a worthwhile enterprise to have tried and supports it. <br /> <br /> Mr. Nick Johnson, 650 Chapel Hill Road, a senior at Albemarle High School, <br />approved of the proposed wall, and noted that he has unsuccessfully tried to circulate <br />pamphlets and this will provide him with a venue. <br /> <br /> Mr. Greg Jackson, 613 Belmont Avenue, favors the monument, though he shares <br />the concerns expressed. Mr. Jackson said he thinks it is a beautiful design, but has some <br />concern about its size and that it will block views. <br /> <br /> Mr. Carl Eure, Dairy Road, a Charlottesville High School student, said the <br />monument will be a way of bringing other people's views together. Mr. Eure suggested <br />that a section of the monument be set aside for graffiti. <br /> <br /> Mr. Luke Wilson, 317 Monte Vista Avenue, spoke in favor of the wall and said he <br />thinks the proposed location, in the center of town, is a good place for it, Mr. Wilson said <br />he thinks graffiti will happen, but it will slow down over time. <br /> <br />As there were no further speakers, the public hearing was closed· <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano said he would like to hear why the e-mail sent to Council was a <br />misrepresentation, asked whether the lectern will be amplified, and said he is interested in <br />hearing more about the site line issue. <br /> <br />Mr. Wheeler said it is not contemplated that the lectern will be amplified. <br /> <br /> Mr. O'Shea, referring to the e-mail, said the design has changed since the first <br />· representation. Mr. O'Shea said they are only asking for concept approval, not approval <br />of the exact design because plans are expected to change and they will have to respond to <br />changes to the mai1 area· <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards said it is unclear what Council is being asked to approve because <br />the lease refers to approval of the design and location. <br /> <br /> Mr. O'Connell said that Council could just approve the concept and delay the <br />lease until the plans are approved, <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano asked if spray painting the monument will be illegal, and Mr. <br />Wheeler said yes. <br /> <br /> <br />
