Mr. Merriwether said the School Board will be unable to give the <br />teacher salary increases it would like to. <br /> <br /> Dr. William Symons, Superintendent of City Schools, asked Mr. Ed Gillespie, <br />Finance Director for the Schools, to give an overview of the upcoming budget. <br /> <br /> Mr. Gillespie said that there was a reduction in VRS expenses last year, and while <br />they could go up this year, that is not anticipated. Health insurance costs are expected to <br />increase 25%. With step increases only for staff and increases in benefits and operating <br />costs, the increase is expected to be $1,020,000. Mr. Gillespie reviewed the proposed <br />budget calendar for the School Board budget. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ron Hutchinson, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, said that class sizes <br />remain small; there are 208 non-resident students this year, 185 paying tuition and 23 <br />who are children of employees.
