She said she is pleased that Council intends to preserve the <br />building, and supported maintaining the integrity of the older part of the building if the <br />outside area is developed. <br /> <br /> Mr. Wyatt Johnson, 1005 Ridge Street, said he likes a portion of what the City <br />Manager proposed, but said that if only the old Jefferson School is preserved and the rest <br />is destroyed, you will not have Jefferson School anymore. Mr. Johnson suggested that <br />houses be built on other City owned lots rather tlmn on the Jefferson School site. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sherry Waxman, a resident of Albemarle County and professional who works <br />with young children with learning disabilities, said that the Jefferson School building and <br />pre-school program both need to be preserved. <br /> <br /> Ms. Urseline Ash, 815 Anderson Street, a staff member of the pre-school, said her <br />daughter attended the pre-school and she hopes it will be kept together at one site. <br /> <br /> Ms. Tonya Houston, 1609 Madison Avenue, said that her daughter attends the <br />pre-school program. She said she had searched for private day care, but did not f'md <br />anything as high a caliber as the pre-school. She said that keeping the pre-school <br />program at Jefferson would be a way to keep the past and present connected. <br /> <br /> A resident of 2900 Morgantown Road, a pre-school employee, supported keeping <br />the pre-school program together as one entity which will provide stability to transient <br />families. She said that having the program at one site also provides for a lot of resource <br />sharing. <br /> <br /> Ms. Berdele Fleming, Harris Road, a pre-school employee and former student of <br />Jefferson School, said that Jefferson School is an historic landmark and she feels it <br />should continue as a place of learning. <br /> <br /> Mr. Herbert Porter, 509 7 1/2 Street, S.W., representing the views of his father <br />who attended Jefferson School, said there should not be differential areas of the building, <br />and the outside of the building should be landscaped and made into outdoor meeting <br />places. Mr. Porter said he thinks the building should remain a school, and he thinks <br />Council can fred the money to put into it. <br /> <br /> Ms. Yvorme Burkes Johnson said she graduated from Jefferson School, and she <br />would like to see it preserved for the next generation. <br /> <br /> Ms. Yvette Johnson Pleasants said she attended Jefferson School, and noted that <br />children respected their school then~ Ms. Pleasants said the school needs to be kept, and <br />should not be hidden by other development. <br /> <br /> Ms. Joy Johnson, 823-D Hardy Drive, said she has heard a lot of the history of <br />Jefferson School since she has lived in Charlottesville, and she thinks all of it should be <br />preserved, including Carter Recreation Center. <br /> <br /> A resident of Albemarle County, a former student of Jefferson School, and a pre- <br />school employee, asked that the pre-school stay together at one site. <br /> <br />As there were no further speakers, the public hearing was closed. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said he supports keeping Jefferson School intact and keeping the pre- <br />school there. Mr. Lynch said he thinks the resources can be found to make it work. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano said Council has heard a lot about the importance of the pre-school, <br />and asked when the School Board last held a public hearing on the issue. Mr. Toscano <br />said it is his feeling that the School Board has not been able to make a decision about the <br />pre-school. <br /> <br /> Mr. O'Connell said that community meetings were held last spring, but he is not <br />aware of formal School Board public hearings on the issue. <br /> <br /> <br />
