286 <br /> <br />NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETENG <br /> <br />A SPECIAL MEETING OF ThE CHARLOTTESVILLE CITY COUNCIL WILL BE <br />HELD ON Friday, March 15, 2002 IN THE Jackson-Via Elementary School. <br /> <br />THE PROPOSED AGENDA IS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Luncheon meeting with School Board <br /> <br />BY ORDER OF THE MAYOR <br /> <br />BY Jeanne Cox <br /> <br /> JACKSON-VIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - March 15, 2002 <br /> <br /> Council met in special session on this date with the following members present: <br />Mr. Caravati, Mr. Cox, Ms. Richards, Mr. Toscano. Absent: Mr. Lynch. <br /> <br /> Ms. Belitta Page, Principal of Jackson-Via Elementary School, welcomed the <br />group to the school. <br /> <br /> Mr. Richard Merriwether, Superintendent of Schools, reviewed the selection <br />process for the School Superintendent. <br /> <br /> Ms. Dede Smith, School Board Member, said that 1,000 surveys from residents <br />have been received regarding the School Superintendent search. <br /> <br /> Ms. Linda Bowen, School Board Member, said that panels wilt be set up modeled <br />after the Police Chief search, and asked that Councilors provide names of citizens who <br />might be interested in serving on the panels, but noted that the School Board will have <br />the final say about who will serve on the panels. <br /> <br /> Mr. Merriwether said that the ultimate decision on hiring the Superintendent will <br />rest with the School Board. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Cox, Ms. Bowen said that a minimum of four <br />principals will participate in the Superintendent hiring process. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Cox, Mr. Merriwether said that the School <br />Board Association and School Board w~l narrow the choice. <br /> <br /> Ms. Muriel Wiggins, School Board Member, said that the School Board will <br />establish criteria for the Superintendent now that it has gotten input from the community. <br />Ms. Wiggins said there is some concern about putting principals on the panels when what <br />they say could ultimately be passed on to their future boss. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said if he was a principal he would want a role in the proceSs, and he <br />supports having their representation. <br /> Mr. T. Lewis, of School Administration, discussed the Alternative School which <br />was established in 1994 and was organized around the theme that it is the last chance for <br />students who qualify for attendance with extreme aberrant behavior. <br /> <br /> Ms. Kathy Johnson Harris, Administrator of the Alternative School, said that 63 <br />students began the year and 43 are currently enrolled. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox suggested that students be encouraged to participate in extra-curricular <br /> activities such as orchestra and band in order to prevent them getting into trouble. <br /> <br />as adjourned. <br /> <br /> sidafit ~ ~ 0/4~-', <br /> <br /> <br />
