61 <br /> <br /> Ms. Kathleen Galvin, 712 Lyons Avenue, spoke in support of Peggy Van Yahres <br />and Tina Rees. She said she has worked with both of them on the PTO Council. Ms. <br />Galvin said Ms. Van Yahres has organizational skills and the ability to get things done, <br />and has been a supporter of City/County cooperation and parental involvement. She said <br />Ms. Rees has experience with special education and vocational rehabilitation, and has a <br />keen understanding of parents who have low involvement in schools. <br /> <br /> Mr. Peter Mclntosh, 624 Davis Avenue, spoke for Peggy Van Yahres and Tina <br />Rees. He said he has interacted with them on both the parental and organizational level <br />and they are both heavily committed to the school system He said Ms. Van Yahres has a <br />great deal of energy and listens well, and Ms. Rees cares a lot for less privileged citizens. <br /> <br /> Ms. Harriett Slaughter, 114 Hartman's Mill Road, said she has known Peggy Van <br />Yahres for 30 years and supports her because she is dedicated and a hard worker. <br /> <br /> Ms. Doris Bowles, 112 Waterbury Court, said that Peggy Van Yahres has been a <br />mentor to her and her son for fourteen years, and even helped her finance her home. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Campbell, 1821 Edgewood Lane, supported Peggy Van Yahres. He said <br />Ms. Van Yahres has been involved in the school system a long time and provided <br />leadership in the private public partnership that secured playground equipment for <br />Burnley Moran School and in the public information program done by the PTO Council <br />showcasing excellence of the school system. Mr. Campbell said Ms. Van Yahres has <br />shown a willingness to serve on committees and get people involved. <br /> <br />As there were no further speakers, the public hearing was closed, <br /> <br /> Mr. Caravati said that Council will interview School Board candidates on June <br />and will make appointments on June 27t~. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said that the representatives of the League of Women Voters and PTO <br />Council sat in on the interviews last year and he would favor doing that aga~ <br /> <br />Mr. Lynch said it would be fine with him to do that. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards said that it was helpful having representatives in the interview last <br />year because no forum was held, and she would favor it again as long as they do not <br />actually participate in the interviews. <br /> <br /> Mr. Toscano said he has some issues with only inviting two people into the <br />interviews and not all of the public, and is concerned about changing the process in the <br />middle of the process. <br /> <br />Mr. Caravati said if it can be arranged it is fine with him. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards expressed concern with having a representative of the PTO Council <br />invited because some of the candidates are part of the PTO Council. Ms. Richards said <br />there is an issue with who you choose to have participate. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said he thinks having the public there is reassuring to the candidates, <br />though he said he thinks Ms. Richards' point about the PTO Council is valid. Mr. Cox <br />suggested that the League be asked to send two people. <br /> <br /> Ms. Richards said she thinks Council needs to adopt a policy about who will be <br />asked to participate for the future. <br /> <br />PUBLIC HEARING: QUITCLAIM DEED - STILL MEADOWS SUBDIVISION <br /> <br /> Mr. Craig Brown, City Attorney, said that the Virginia Department of <br />Transportation is accepting a street with gas easements into the state system. <br /> <br />The public hearing was opened, but as there were no speakers, the public hearing <br /> <br /> <br />
