<br />Mr. Gene German, Director of Parks and Reczeation, responded to
<br />
<br />questions from Council regarding changes and modifications to the
<br />existing Summer Playground Program. After discussion of the seven
<br />options submitted to Council in a written report, the following options
<br />
<br />were agreed upon:
<br />
<br />1)
<br />
<br />Conduct a full-time program at Westhaven by hiring two
<br />full-time supervisors in addition to the existing staff
<br />person.
<br />
<br />2)
<br />
<br />Start the programs at First Street Housing site and
<br />Forest Hills Park on June 21 to coincide with the other
<br />
<br />programs.
<br />
<br />3)
<br />
<br />Conduct a full-time program at Tonsler Park by hiring two
<br />full-time supervisors in addition to the existing staff
<br />person.
<br />
<br />4)
<br />
<br />Provide supervision during the lunch hour at both First
<br />Street and Forest Hills for the entire summer.
<br />
<br />5)
<br />
<br />Provide supervision during the lunch hour~at the Venable
<br />School site.
<br />
<br />Because of the.,~modifidatiohs in the program, the appropriation
<br />
<br />amount was changed to $7,400. On motion by Mr. Conover, Council
<br />
<br />voted to amend the appropriation of $8,621.06 as presented to $7,400.00
<br />
<br />The appropriation of $7,400 for the Summer Recreation Program was
<br />
<br />adopted by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. Buck, Mr. Conover, Mrs.
<br />
<br />Gleason, Dr. Hall. Noes: None. Absent: Mr. Albro.
<br />
<br />On motion by Mrs. Gleason, seconded by Dr. Hall, the following
<br />
<br />resolution was adopted by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. Buck, Mr.
<br />
<br />Conover, Mrs. Gleason, Dr. Hall. Noes: None. Absent: Mr. Albro.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the City Fire Department has recently purchased
<br />replacement helmets for its personnel and will sell the old
<br />helmets ~n the manner prescribed for sale 6f surplus City
<br />property; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the identification shields have been removed from
<br />the old helmets prior to sale; the shields have no monetary
<br />value and are not usable on the new helmets or by any other
<br />organization; now, .therefore, be it
<br />
<br /> RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia
<br />that the Chief of the Fire Department is hereby authorized and
<br />directed to distribute the helmet identification shi61ds to individual
<br />department employees as a token of gratitude for their service to the
<br />City.

<br />On motion by Mr. Conover, seconded by Mrs. Gleason, the following
<br />
<br />resolution was adopted by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. Buck, Mr.

<br /> WHEREAS, Charles F. Helm, Jr. a resident of Baltimore, Maryland
<br />and owner of property in Albemarle County recently donated 170,000
<br />azalea plants for use in parks, and other public areas of cities in
<br />Virginia; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Charlottesville Department of Parks and Recreation
<br />received 13,000 of these azaleas having a value of more than $25,000;
<br />and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Department was assisted in the receipt of this
<br />generous gift by Joe Miller of Virginia National Bank, and by numerous
<br />citizens who assisted in planting the azaleas in several city locations;
<br />now, ~heref~, be it
<br />
<br /> RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia,
<br />that we express our gratitude to Charles F. Helm, Jr., for his generous
<br />contribution which will add beauty to Charlottesville and other parts
<br />of this Commonwealth for many years to come; and be it further
