15.6 <br /> <br />school projects, including the sports complex, auditorium, roof, gynasium, <br />wrestling room and classroom (alternate 1), fly loft (alternate 2), and <br />orchestra pit (alternate 3). <br /> <br /> Mr. Robert Sheets, Director of Finance, presented a report on project <br />costs. <br /> <br /> Mayor Buck opened the public hearing. <br /> <br /> Ms. Elizabeth Montgomery of 1613 Concord Drive addressed Council <br />stating that a quality auditorium for the students at Charlottesville <br />High School is needed, and added her support for funding the orchestra <br />pit and fly loft. <br /> <br /> Mr. Arthur Montgomery of 1613 Concord Drive, a senior at Charlottes- <br />ville High School, statbd that there is a need for an auditorium at the <br />high school for play productions, concerts and musical performances. He <br />-stated that presently, speakers can only lecture to one class at a time. <br /> <br />Ms. Joanne McGraw of 1504 Greenleaf Lane spoke in support of the <br />proposed projects and suggested instituting a user fee for the facility. <br /> <br /> Mr. Peter Munger of 1945 Michael Place stated that the new facilities <br /> at the high school can meet many needs of the community, and he indicated <br /> his support of the entire project. <br /> <br /> Mr. Gerald Hargis of 1526 Trailridge Road strongly endorsed the <br /> gymnasium and auditorium. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Ashlin Smith of Park Street stated that her family had been very <br /> happy with the City ~chools since transferring from private schools. Mrs. <br /> Smith supported the project. <br /> <br /> Ms. Harriet Noland endorsed alternates two and three, with some stage <br /> modifications. <br /> <br /> Ms. Betty Jennings of Grove Road, and a previous Band Boosters <br /> President, supported the project for the sake of the students. <br /> <br /> Mr. Adam Steinberg of Rutledge Avenue, and a senior at Charlottesville <br /> High School, indicated his support of the fly loft and orchestra pit. <br /> <br /> Mr. Michael Bednar supported the project, but indicated that he hoped <br /> the project would be well built. He stated his concern in the disparity in <br /> the bid price. <br /> <br /> Mr. Darden Towe of 607 Davis Avenue endorsed the project and community <br /> involvement and added that he hoped care would be given to maintenance of <br /> the grounds. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ralph Minehart of Yorktown Drive wholeheartedly supported the <br /> auditorium and additional facilities. <br /> <br /> Ms~ Kay Robinson, President of Piedmont Council of the Arts, stated <br /> <br /> that the project will encourage the growth of the arts in the community. <br /> Mr. Richard Jennings of Jamestown Drive supported the project. <br /> <br /> As there were no further speakers, the public hearing was closed. <br /> <br /> Mr. Conover stressed that the project involved not only the auditorium <br /> and gymnasium, but a multi-field sports complex and reroofing of the high <br /> school building. <br /> <br /> Mr. Conover moved to approve both projects and all alternatives. Mrs. <br /> Gleason seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved by Council. <br /> <br /> Dr. Gunter stated that she would like staff to investigate~'~he possible <br /> need for increasing the power supply in the auditorium. <br /> <br /> <br />
