204

City Manager re:
UMTA Grant
Application

Consideration re:
Ordinance - Central
Absentee Voter
District

A motion by Mr. Fife, seconded by, Mr. Brunnon that

our representatives in Congress be notified that the City
Council is unhappy with the distribution of Public Works
Funds, was unanimously adopted.

The City Manager advised the Council that he has filed
an amendatory application with UMTA for the Capital Program
for the Bus System. He stated that in the initial grant they
gave us money for architectural and engineering services for
repair facilities for the buses, but did not grant money
for the facility. He stated we have now designed the
facility and sent to UMTA for approval. He also stated
that since the City started operating the system we find
we need a fourth large bus and that three were granted
under the original application. He stated we asked if
they would pay for the fourth bus and received a
tentative yes, but it would have to be approved by
application. The bus will be delivered in March and when
delivered if we have not received approval from UMTA
we will have to cancel or pay for it with City funds, tme
costs of the bus is approximately $59,000. He stated
that the application has now been filed and hopefully will
be approved within the next sixty days. Mr. Hendrix
also stated that the amendatory application stated that
the City did not plan on going to 30 minute headways within
the next two or three years due to the excessive cost.
He stated the original planning proposal submitted to
UMTA had indicated that the City hoped to go to 30 minute
headways sooner than is now thought possible.

An ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A
CENTRAL ABSENTEE VOTER ELECTION DISTRICT PURSUANT TO
~24.1-233.1 OF THE CODE OF VIRGINIA,'! was offered by Mr.
Barbour, seconded by Mr. Gatewood and carried over to the
a~special meeting of January 25, 1977 for consideration.

On motion the meeting adjourned.

Clerk

CAR~ER RECREATION CENTER - MONDAY,
JANUARY 24, 1977

Special meeting

Pursuant to the following call:

Mr. Charles L. Barbour
Mr. Laure~ceLiA.~Brunton
Mr. Francis H. Fife
Mr. Edwin E. Gatewood, Jr.
Mrs. Nancy K. O'Brien

./
