Ayes: Mr. Barbour, Mr.Brunton, <br />Mr. Fife, Mr.Gatewood and Mrs. O'Brien. Noes: None. <br /> <br /> On motion the meeting adjourned. <br /> <br />President <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - MONDAY, JUNE 20, 1977 <br /> <br />Regular meeting <br /> <br />Approval of minunes <br /> <br />Consideration re: <br />Cigarette Tax <br /> <br /> The Council met in regular session on this date with the following <br />members present: Mr. Barbour, Mr. Brunton, Mr. Gatewood and Mrs. <br />O'Brien. Absent: Mr. Fife <br /> <br /> The minutes of the meeting of June 6, 1977 were approved as <br />presentedl <br /> <br /> A proposed ordinance to levy a tax on cigarettes was introduced and <br />discussed. Eight wholesale and retail merchants addressed the Council <br />in opposition to the proposed tax, stating that it was an unfair and <br />disclimintory tax and would cause transfer of sales to the County and <br />loss of sales tax. Mr. Barbour requested that action be deferred <br />until the full Council is present. The Mayor suggested that the <br />Council consider deleting one mile of street paving instead of adopting <br />the cigarette tax to balance the budget. <br /> <br /> <br />
