Executive Session <br /> <br />Public Hearing re: <br />City and School <br />Budgets <br /> <br /> The Council met in special session on this dat.e with the <br /> following members present~: Mr. Barbour, Mr. Brunton, Mr. Fife, <br /> Mr. Gatewood and Mrs. O'Brien. Absent: None. <br /> <br /> A motion by Mr. Gatewood, seconded byMr. Barbour that <br /> Council meet in executive session to discuss a matter exempted <br /> by Section 2.1-344(a)(2)of the Virginia Freedom of Information <br /> Act, was adopted by the following redorded vote. Ayes: Mr. <br /> Barbour, Mr. Brunton, Mr. Fife, Mr. Gatewood and Mrs. O'Brien. <br /> Noes: None. <br /> <br /> On motion t~e executive session adjourned. <br /> <br /> A public hearing was held on this date on the proposed <br /> City and School Budgets for Fiscal year 1978-79. The Mayor <br /> afforded anyone present an oppOrtunity to speak either for <br /> or against the proposed budgets. <br /> <br /> The following people spoke in support of the School <br /> Budget and urged the Council to fund it in its entirety: Ms. <br /> Sally Brown, Co-Chairman of the Venable PTA; Ms. Donna <br /> Goings, President Charlottesville Education Association; Ms. <br /> Pat Harris, teacher at Jackson-Via School; Mr. Bob Wilson, <br /> teacher at Buford Middle School and Mrs. Sue Lewis. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Virginia Germino, Chairman of the Social Development <br /> Commission requested that no cuts be made in the Community <br /> Development Budget. <br /> <br /> Dr. William Harris requested on cuts in the Social <br /> Planners in the Community Development Budget. <br /> <br /> Mr. E. O. McCue, III, Chairman of the Joint City-County <br /> Tourism Committee requested that Council to allocate funds <br /> in the budget for design, development and implementation of <br /> a tourism program. <br /> <br /> Mr. Paul H. Wood, President, Chamber of Commerce also <br />requested that funds be allocated for a tourism program. He <br />requested that $$0~000 be placed in the budget for tourism <br />which would be approximately 50% of the projected transient <br />room tax'. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Linda Vining of the Virginia Swim Club questioned <br /> <br /> the suggested cuts in the acquatics program in the Recreation <br /> Budget. <br /> <br /> Mr. C. E. Anderson advocated an increase in the bus <br /> <br /> fares, an increase in the gas rates and questioned salary <br /> inreases for department heads. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ken Ackerman, Executive Director of the Monticell° <br />Area Community ActiOn Agency requested that $1,290 be added <br />for a summer food program. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lionel Kay questioned a number of expenditures in <br /> <br />the proposed budget. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Jean Minehart on behalf of the League of Women Voters <br />suggested transfer of Social Service Programs from the School <br />Budget to other City departments and also suggested funding <br />the replacement of school buaes through the Capital Improvements <br />Funds. <br /> <br />347 <br /> <br /> <br />
