255 <br /> <br /> Ms. Carolyn Belt stated that she runs at Pen Park and <br />objected to the expansion, adding that she felt it was too <br />expensive a project. <br /> <br /> Mr. Clyde North, a retired City resident, stated that he <br />strongly favored expansion of the golf course and added that <br />he felt golf fees for County residents shoUld be reduced. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sally Feldman stated that there are no other public <br />courses in the near vicinity and noted that many women play <br />golf. <br /> <br /> Mr. Preston Stallings, a City resident, stated that a <br />need clearly exists for an 18 hole golf course and the City <br />has promised expansion of the Pen Park course for several <br />years. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ralph Latham of King Mountain Road and President of <br />the Senior Golfers Association, stated that he represents 100 <br />seniors who regularly play golf, 38 of whom are women. Mr. <br />Latham stated that a great need exists for the additional 9 <br />holes because of the crowded conditions. <br /> <br /> Mr. Mark Lorenzoni stated that he supported the <br />expansion of the golf course because he felt it was needed, <br />but requested that a suitable compromise be found for the <br />relocation of the jogging trail which is used by the Track <br />Club, either in another section of Pen Park or at another <br />park. <br /> <br /> Ms. Ruth Brierdon of Park Plaza, stated that she <br />supports maintaining the-wild area at Pen'Park for hikers. <br /> <br /> Ms. Dorothy Lankford, an Albemarle County resident, <br />stated that she is a new golfer and felt that an 18 hole <br />public golf course would be a great asset to the community, <br />especially for economic development purposes. <br /> <br /> Ms. Adele Wood of Woodlake Drive, stated that she <br />favored preserving the wildlife area at Pen Park. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ralph McDaniels, a recent resident of the City, <br />stated that he supported expansion of the golf course and <br />noted that Ivy Creek Natural area is available and <br />underutilized. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix reviewed the history of the golf course at <br />Pen Park, noting that the property had been purchased with <br />the intention of building an 18 hole golf course, that public <br />hearings have been held on the expansion, and financing <br />approved by Council~, with the condition that nature and <br />jogging trails be relocated and redesigned if necessary. Mr. <br />Hendrix added that extensive wildlife areas exist in the <br />newly opened Rivanna Park and that additional wildlife areas <br />will be added when property-is acquired for. the Greenbelt <br />Park along Rivanna River. Mr. Hendrix stated that the final <br />design for the golf course expansion has not been approved. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters stated that a commitment has been made by <br />Council for several years to build the additional 9 holes at <br />Pen Park and she felt the plans should go forward. Ms. <br />Waters stated that she felt the City has successfully <br />attempted to balance active versus passive activities in the <br />parks. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix explained that the final design of the golf <br />course will go to the Planning Commission for approval. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck requested that final design approval be made by <br />the Council and made a motion to approve a resolution <br />reaffirming Council's previous decision to move forward with <br />expansion of the Pen Park golf course, making allowances for <br />nature trails. <br /> <br /> <br />
