PUBLIC HEARING: <br />SIDEWALKS <br /> <br />desire to have the sid~ <br /> <br /> Ms. Jean Minehart <br />and suggested that 4-w~ <br />Drive and Kenwood Lane <br /> <br /> Ms. Wilkerson sta~ <br /> <br /> sible fiscal trustee for employees and that if any savings was realized, <br /> <br /> he would advocate returning it to the system. <br /> <br /> Dr~ Gunter expressed concern that employees feel tha~ the retirement <br /> benefits are~stabte and will not change repeatedly. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck stated that there was no guarantee that the system would <br /> <br /> not change as it was subject to being properly invested and maintained by <br /> <br /> the legislative body. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix suggested that Mr. Pete WingfieId, City Benefits Administrator, <br /> <br /> figure retirement benefit comparisons for .~hose employees who request it. <br /> Mr. Buck continued.the item to the next meeting. <br /> <br /> Mr. Robert Smith of University Circle submitted a petition asking that <br /> <br /> the sidewalks on University Circle be repaired. <br /> <br /> Ms. Sally Nelson read a statement by Mrs. William Smithy and Mrs. Tilman, <br /> two elderly women who reside on University Circle. The women expressed <br /> conce'rn about the dangerous condition of the sidewalk for elderly oersons <br /> who walk along it. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Cheryl Early of Jefferson Park Circle presented a petition asking <br /> that the road bed along Jefferson Park CirCle be made even to allow-a safe <br /> passageway for pedestrians, or that passage from McElroy Drive be cut off <br /> in order to-decrease the traffic flow. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Dorothy Singleton reported to Council that she had injured herself <br />while walking along the sidewalk on University Circle. <br /> <br /> Mr. Richard Jones, representing the owners of 224 Court Square, stated <br />that the brick sidewalk in front of that building was in need of repair. <br /> <br />Mr. 'Jones said that both the owners of the building and the Albemarle County <br />HiStorical Society were willing to share in the expense of installing a new <br />brick sidewalk~ <br /> <br /> Mrs. Sandy Urksa commented that she was happy to see that Azalea Gardens <br />was on the sidewalk list. <br /> <br /> Mr. Allen Gianniny of the Albemarle Historical Society stressed his <br /> <br /> ~walk fronting 224 Court Square replaced with bricks. <br /> .ndicated her support of a sidewalk on Yorktown Drive <br /> .y stoo signs be installed on the co~ner of Yorktown <br /> <br /> d her support of a sidewalk on Yorktown Drive. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Thompson Stated that he had driven~or walked all the streets <br /> <br />on the priority list.and felt University Circle should be given priority <br />because of its state o~ disrepair. <br /> <br /> Mr. Campbell of Yorktown Drive stated he felt there had been a great <br /> <br />deal of study and discussion about the sidewalks, but very little progress. <br /> <br /> Dr. Gunter responded that construction cannot begin when there are some <br />neighbors who oppose the sidewalks, as had been the case on Yorktown Drive. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Via stated his feeling that there were other areas in greater <br />need of sidewalks than Harris Road. <br /> <br /> As there were no further comments from the public, the public hearing <br /> <br />was closed. <br /> <br /> Mr. Conover moved approval of the list of priorities for sidewalk con- <br />struction and~reconstruction.. Dr. Hall seconded the motion. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck suggested that work be started on the first and second priorities <br /> <br /> <br />
