WHEREAS, the Council wishes to encourage further such preservation
<br />efforts; and
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council has decided that such efforts by property
<br />owners should be publicly recognized; and
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council, with the advice of the Historic Landmarks
<br />Commission, ~he Board of Architectural Review concurring, will
<br />recognize outstanding examples of rehabilitation.
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the
<br />City of Charlottesville recognizes the Leterman Building, 105 - 107
<br />West Main Street, and commends its rehabilitation by Richard Shank,
<br />Mitchell Van Yahres, and William Elwo~d.

<br /> WHEREAS, the transfer of the old Post Office building on Market
<br />Street to the Jefferson~Madison Regional Library Board afforded this
<br />community and the Library commodious quarters for a new Central
<br />Library; and
<br /> WHEREAS, M. Jack Rinehart, Jr. and Williams and Tazewell, with
<br />the advice of the Library Board, imaginatively converted this important
<br />civic bUilding into a resource of benefit to the entire ~ommunity; ~nd
<br /> WHEREAS, the handsome new Central Library with its expanded
<br />library space and community meeting rooms has contributed significantly
<br />to the City's goal of revitalizing downtown Charlottesville.
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City
<br />of Charlottesville recognizes and commends M. Jack Rinehart, Jr.,
<br />Williams and Tazewell, and the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Board
<br />for their adaptive use of the old Post Office building.

<br /> WHEREAS, the Office of Community Development of the City of
<br />Charlottesville has for a number of years been in the forefront of
<br />encouraging preservation and renovation efforts in this city; and
<br /> WHEREAS, the Office of Community Development did much to coordinate
<br />and encourage the efforts of various groups and interested citizens in
<br />the restoration of the Starr Hill neighborhood, thus making it a community
<br />project in every sense of the word; and
<br /> WHEREAS, this efforts has contributed significantly to the City's
<br />goal of making West Main Street an interesting and vibrant corridor
<br />between the central business district and the University, thereby
<br />enhancing the quality of life for citizens and visitors alike.
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City
<br />of Charlottesville hereby commends the Office of Community Development,
<br />and all the groups and citizens involved in the Starr Hill project, and
<br />extends to them its appreciation.

<br /> WHEREAS, K. Edward Lay has labored long and effectively in the
<br />cause of historic preservation in the City of Charlottesville; and
<br /> WHEREAS, these pioneering efforts have been successful and of
<br />demonstrable benefit to the citizens and the City of Charlottesville.
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of
<br />Charlottesville hereby, commends K. Edward Lay and extends to'him its
<br />appreciation.

<br /> Mr. Robert Sheets, DireCtor of Finance, summarized water, sewer,
<br />and gas rate change recommendations contained in the written report
<br />submitted to Council.
<br />
<br /> A work .session on the proposed changes was set for Monday, June llth
<br />following the work session with the Social Development Commission.
<br /> Mr. George Ray, Director of Economic Development, summarized the
<br />report on the Safeway Building on the West Main Street. Mr. Ray stated
<br />that he felt Safeway was making an effort to sublease the building, but
<br />that there was little the City could do to expedite the process.
<br /> Mrs. Gleason and Mr. Conover suggested that perhaps there could be
<br /> a' marketing effort made by City staff to encourage occupancy of the
<br /> building.

<br /> Mr. Hendrix started that the idea of a joint City-County sports
<br /> complex was an outgrowth of ~plans for the rejuvenation of Mclntire Park.
