Presentation re: <br />Greater Ch'ville <br />Area Development <br />Corporation <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Albro, seconded by Mrs. 0'Brien the project <br /> was approved as presented by Mr. Smith, and the City Attorney was <br /> authorized to prepare the contract, in consultation with Mr. Smith's <br /> attorney, for execution hy the Mayor. <br /> <br /> Mra. Aahland Smith and Mrs. Judy Dobbs highly recommended <br /> approval of the project. <br /> <br /> Mr. Paul Mood, Chairman of the Greater Charlottesville Area <br />Development Corporation, addressed the Council and presented a <br />brief concept of the Corporation. He stated the strategy of the <br />Corporation is based on the premiae that the economic structure <br />of the Charlottesville area is not restricted to City/County <br />boundaries and that a regional developed strategy is mutually <br />beneficial to Charlottesville, Albemarle and the contiguous <br />counties. The strategy seeks to employ the unique characteristics <br />and needs of each of the geographic areas within the purview <br />and match those characteristics with appropriate economic develop- <br />ment. He stated Charlottesville and Albemarle County may not <br />be suited to manufacturing facilities, yet, can prosper from <br />additional professional research and service development. He <br />stated there are four basic concepts behind the corporation which <br />are: 1. to aggressively seek national corporate headquarters to <br />locate in Charlottesville/Albemarle County area; 2. the foster <br />in Charlottesville and Albemarle County major research centers <br />which will compliment the University of Virginia; 3. to work <br />closely with political entities and individuals in the counties <br />neighboring Charlottesville and Albemarle in order to place <br />manufacturing concerns interested in locating in this area; 4. <br />to assist small, light manufacturing facilities in locating in <br />the Charlottesville/Albemarle County area. He stated the <br />Corporation will stress such things as the limited number of new <br />firms which will be allowed to enter the area; the requirement to <br />develop and submit site~plans which are compatible with the <br />environmentally concious area; the fact that both present and <br />former corporate executives have chosen CharlotteSville and <br />Albemarle for their homes because it is such a desirable place <br />to live; the area has such a rich historic tradition that we <br />extend to protect; that the UniVersity of Virginia provides a <br />great resource to business; many leisure and cultural advantages <br />not normally associated with a small city; and the easy access <br />from the Charlottesville/Albemarle area to and from New York and <br />Atlanta. <br /> <br /> Mr. Darrell Ferguson, Vice-Chairman of the Greater Charlottes- <br />ville Area Development Corporation, also addressed the Council and <br />requested Council's approval of the concept of this organization <br />and appoint a member of Council and requested Council's approval <br />of the concept of this organization and appoint a member of Council <br />or a member of staff to work with the corporation. <br /> <br /> <br />
