290

Other business

Executive session

Special session

The State, as a result of a recent study, has identified nine
of these crossings as dangerous and requiring attention. The
State has reqeusted that Council adopt a priority list of
crossings requiring safety improvements, estimating the cost
at $500,000 to $750,000 of which the City,s share would be 5%.
Mr. John Berberich, Director of Public Works, discussed with
CounCil members the priority list of railroad crossings as

'well as some concerns by Council members about the necessity
of using gates at all crossings, the efficacy of such gates
and the annual cost of maintenance. It was agreed that staff
would prepare answers to these questions and report back to
Council at its next meeting, The resolution was thus deferred
pending this additional information~

Ms. Gleason read a letter from William B. Leaman, Manager of
State and Local Youth Facilities of the State of Virginia,
commending the Community Attention Home programs as having
successfully completed a certification process by a team of
examiners from the Department of Corrections with some of the
highest scores achieved by group hOmes in the State.

Mr. Conover suggested that the agenda for Council meetings

be flashed on TV for those watching at home and it~was agreed
that the Cable TV Company would be approached about the possibility
of doing so.

On motion by Mr. Albro, seconded by Ms. Gleason, Council
unanimously agreed to meet in executive session to discuss matters
exempted by Section 2.1-344(a)(1)(Personnel) and Section 2.1-344
(a)(6)(Legal) of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

On motion the meeting adjourned.

Clerk

TAKE NOTICE

A special meeting of the Council will be held on Monday, the
14th inst. at 7:30 p.m. o'clock.
BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM

1.
