.3zl. 8

Approval re:
Additional sheriff
deputy

Other business re:
Report on condemned
house on Ridge St.

Executive session

Regular session

Approval of minutes

Matters by the public

Mr. Paul Garrett~, Assistant City Attorney, stated that he agreed
that the City was in a legally vulnerable position if it did
not correct the case overload situation. On motion by Dr. Hall,
seconded by Ms. Gleason, Council unanimously approved Mr.
Hendrix' request.

Mr. Hendrix asked for Council's approval of the hiring of

one additional full-t~e deputy in the City Sheriff's office
to assist in the workload that is currently handled by the bailiff
for the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court, Because that
position was formerly partly funded hy the City but is now being
entirely funded by the State Compensation Board, there is money
available in this year's budget for the new deputy's salary and
no additional appropriation is required. Council was willing to
allow this during the durr~nt fiscal year but Mr. Albro stated
that he wanted to make sure Council had the opportunity to review
the position during budget considerations next year. On motion
by Mr, Albro, seconded by Dr. Hall, Council unanimously approved
the request.

Mr. Conover requested current information about the house on
Ridge Street that had been condemned but is still inhabited by the
tenants. Mr. Hendrix responded that some repair work had been done
on the house and it had been freshly placarded with condemnation
notices'. The City is attempting to assist the family to find another
place to live but has had no success as yet. Mr. Garrett added that
the City is attempting to enforce the minimum housing standards
regulations but, presently, moving the family is more important.
On motion by Dr. Hall, seconded by Ms. Gleason, Council
unanimously agreed to meet in executi~e-~session immeidately
following tile regular session to discuss matters exempted by

Section 2.1-344(a) (1) (Personnel) of the Virginia Freedom of Information
Act.

On motion by Mr. Albro, seconded by Ms. Gleason, Council also
unanimously agreed to meet in executive session on Wednesday,

October 22 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss matters exempted by Section 2.1-
344(a) (6) (Legal) of' the Virginia Free~om of Information ACt.
~On motion the meeting adjourned~
Clerk President

COUNCIL CHAMBER - MONDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1980
Council met in regular session on this date with ~me following
members present: Mr~ Albro, Mr. Buck, Mr. Conover, Ms. Gleason,
Dr. Hall.
