Public hearing for small cities grant <br />2. Consideration of Christmas holiday schedule <br /> <br /> BY ORDER OF <br /> <br />Kathleen Roletter (signed) Francis L. Buck'(signed) <br /> <br />BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM-MONDAY, NOV. 24, 1980 <br />Council met in special session on this date with the following <br />members present: Mr. Albro~ Mr. Buck, Mr. Conover,-Ms. Gleason, <br />Dr. Hall. Absent: None. <br /> Mr. Cole Hendrix, City Manager, recommended to Council that <br /> City employees be given the day after Christmas, Friday, December <br /> 26, as a holiday in exchange for Lee-Jackson Day, a normal holiday <br /> in January. On motion by Mr. Conover, seconded by Dr. Hall, <br /> Council unanimously approved the recommendation. Ms. Gleason and <br /> Mr. Albro were absent during the vote, <br /> Mr. Satyendra Huja, Director of Planning and Community <br /> Development, addressed Council about a proposed $1.54 million HUD <br /> small cities grant. The funds, if received, will be used for <br /> traffic, drainage, sidewalk and landscaping improvements; housing <br /> rehabilitation and a house bank program; land for housing~ low- <br /> interest loans for low and moderate income homeowners and propective <br /> home buyers; and for economic development. Mr. Huja stated that- <br /> the City staff has worked closely with the Fifeville Neighborhood <br /> Association and neighborhQod residents in designing the grant <br /> requests. <br /> <br /> Ms, Ethel Henderson, President, of the Fifeville Neighborhood <br /> Association, confirmed Mr. Hu]a's remarks about the improvements <br /> needed in the neighborhood and asked for Council's approval of <br /> the grant application. <br /> Mr. Eugene Williams of Dogwood Housing Ltd. endorsed the grant <br /> application and remarked that there is a critical need for decent <br /> housing in this neighborhood. Dogwood Housing Ltd. currently <br /> owns 10 parcels and 23 units in the area and would like to use <br /> unemployed tenants in the neighborhood in housing rehabilitation <br /> to increase neighborhood pride and teach a marketable skill to <br /> those workers. Mr, Williams stated that the grant would help <br /> reduce crime in the area, boost neighborhood morale and pride, <br /> <br /> <br />
